• The Banner Orthopaedic Residency was accredited to begin


orthopaedic education in July 2007.

• Banner Good Samaritan Medical Center is the sponsoring


institution where the core curriculum, the PGY-1 rotations,
the MSK Trauma Service and research are based.

• The program is fully enrolled with twenty residents,


graduating 3 residents in June 2014.

• Four PGY-1 positions will be available in the 2014 match.

Alex C. McLaren, MD, serves as the
Program Director for the Banner
Orthopedic Residency. After graduating
from Queen's University School of
Medicine, Kingston, Ontario, Canada in
1977, Dr McLaren completed an
orthopedic residency at the University of
Western Ontario in 1982 and a fellowship
at the University of Southern California in
1983. Dr McLaren is first and foremost an
orthopedic educator whose career has
included research and administration of
training programs. His clinical interests
include orthopedic infections, revision
arthroplasty and complex musculoskeletal
trauma.

We are fortunate to be one of the few institutions in the country with


an AAOS-TOL haptic simulator for knee arthroscopy.
Current Areas of Research:
• Local delivery of antimicrobials and bioactive peptides
– porosity enhancement to increase local delivery
– in situ polymerizing delivery vehicles
– antifungals, antibacterials
– quorum sensing, denosumab

• Quantitative MRI for in vivo distribution following local delivery


• Cellular and molecular biological enhancement for atrophic wound healing
• Anatomic geometry of the SI region of pelvis
• Motor skills under magnification and motion analysis during microsurgery
• Surgical skills in knee arthroscopy
• Biomechanics of fracture fixation
• Multiple clinical reviews for spinal procedures
• Cost analysis of orthopaedic care

All 20 residents are actively involved in annual scholarly projects which are
present at our Annual Research Symposium each June
