Criticism

Times: They are criticized on commercialization and this can be proved on the high correlation between
the total score and the research score. The assumption that is made here is that the research will
provide external grant/reward to the faculty. Also, there are No Non-English Institution in the top 20.
Also, only 5 institutions make it to the top 50 which have non-English curriculum.

Shanghai ranking: The rankings are criticized for focusing on raw research power and for undermining
humanities and quality of education. The rankings have more focus on HICI score, publications (High
correlation). Also, many variables which accounts for quality of instruction like quality of faculty, quality
of education are missing from the analysis. This shows that these variables are not included in the
analysis and thus considered unimportant.

World Ranking: They have given rankings on each variable and thus used a different system of ranking
from the other systems. The variables used by them cover most of the areas required for a good
ranking. They are the only ranking system which have Non-English instructing institutions in their top 20.
