Power in KP (2013-2018)

Compiled By: Musa Virk

Documented by: Anas Ahmad

A. The projects completed by KP government that were initiated by previous

government are of 56 Mega Watt (MW). These plus 18 MW, Pehrur (completed in

2010), makes 76.6 MW and the Federal government has failed to agree on Power

Purchase Agreement with KP.

B. 215 MWs of hydel projects are under construction and these are to be completed

in 2018-2019. The list of these along with the 56 MW projects already completed

totaling 271 MW is attached here:

C. The 350 mini hydel power projects (mHPPs) are being constructed of which 260

are complete, of which most of them are functional. When completed they will

supply 35 MW of cheap electricity to remote areas in KP under local councils that

are cut off from the national grid. All these mHPPs are expected to be completed by

June 2018 and then shall be expanded to 1000 mHPPs in the next tenure, which

would produce up to 100 MW.

D. 506 MW projects are under constructions in Chitral with the help of FWO costing

$1.1 billion to be completed in 4 years.

E. 7 projects of 668 MW are offered to the private sector. Of these, Sharmai HPP

(150 MW) was awarded last year, in July. The other 6 are almost finalized too with

the private sector and only Federal approval for tariff is pending.

F. There were 10 projects of around 2000 MW that KP government had proposed to

be included in CPEC. The feasibility study is complete for all of these projects.

Mysteriously, the federal gov hasn't included a single one of these. KP government

will look for private sector investment now.

G. 50 MW solar project is also in the pipeline, to be done in collaboration with a

Canadian company and MoUs were signed. This will be in Hattar economic zone

developed under CPEC.

H. The total demand of electricity in KP is 3000 MW while it gets 2000 MW from

national grid. The projects that were under KP government and sold to WAPDA

before 2013 were of 105 MW (See picture). 4000MW worth of projects have been

initiated by this KP government and none are fossil fuel based.

I. Also the total development budget for KP in 5 years was 802 billion rupees and

these are multi billion dollars projects so KP government does not have the liberty

to spend freely hence relying on private sector investment.
