Specialism - Editing

Rationale

Throughout my 2-year creative media course, I feel like I have achieved a huge amount in terms of
skills, and knowledge. Firstly, I think I have adapted well in terms of editing and using editing
software’s. This is because I thought it was really interesting to learn how editing has developed
from, a simple stop and pause to software’s such as premiere pro which are made only for editing.
Knowing this made me interested in seeing how much of an impact editing has on a production. I
think I have improved massively on camera shots from the first year of college due to more
experience in using a camera and from past research on what makes a good camera shot and how a
certain shot can affect an audience. I have also gained a greater understanding on analysing a movie.
This is because I have learnt about how the type of music, colour, shot, and setting can define a
mood or motive that the director is trying to portray

Project concept

Our production will include metaphors and juxtapositions to show the characters emotions because
the whole idea of our silent film is to show how the character has two minds. Therefore, mental
health will play a huge role in our production as well as a romantic side because our main character
will be hallucinating a girl who he thinks is real and loves. The overall concept of our project is
showing what the main character goes through during his life in one day and how he is slowly falling
into chaos due to this girl he keeps seeing. Through the use of foley sounds, music, camera angles
and editing techniques, I think that we can create a new modern day silent film that is effective and
impactful to our audience. I also think it is a great way to show my specialism and the main
characters thoughts and feelings of what’s real and what’s not. The overall story line is about a boy
called Joel who starts to fall into chaos throughout his day. He keeps seeing a girl called Phoebe
wherever he goes but because of his mental state, this girl doesn’t actually exist. This is one of the
many reasons as to why his day starts to fall into chaos. In some of the scenes during our production,
we will be including split screen shots to show reality and what’s in his head. This will allow the
audience to understand what he sees, and what everyone else sees. There will be a range of close-
up shots to capture Joel’s emotions well and will also be using Foley sounds and music to set the
mood or to tell the viewer how Joel is feeling, whether that’s happy or sad.

Evaluation

I will evaluate my work by completing my weekly blogs and talk about the problems that I face
during each unit. This can also be time to reflect upon my work and improve my work to a high
standard which means I will need to make sure I complete the work before the deadlines to give me
the chance to receive feedback and improve upon it. I will intend on recording my decision making
through updating my production schedule and also my weekly blogs each week. I will also use the

feedback I receive from my peers and teachers to improve my work. I can also use this feedback to
look at things I didn’t like in my production and this will allow me to go back and change it. As I’m
working with Eddie in this unit, we will be able to give each other feedback during the whole process
and this will allow us to exceed in this unit because we will both be giving each other knowledge
about our production and throughout the whole unit.
