Introduction
My name is David Hernandez and I am currently a Junior at Woodrow Wilson
High School and in our CEA class we were given a project that entails us renovating a
library that is in Noblesville, Indiana. The existing library pre-renovation was hollow and
was only a large building with two empty floors. I have incorporated a green roof,
structural components and other additional changes to create an environmentally
friendly library that is also very efficient and strong enough, structurally to last decades
upon decades without a high requirement for maintenance.

Code and Regulations


Constraints faced before construction were referring to the codes of Noblesville,
Indiana to make sure we have not violated any which would negatively impact the
efficiency of the library. All codes were found on the International Building Code website
including local codes for Noblesville. Many of these codes mainly have to do with the
efficiency and/or condition of people in the building like the Indiana Building Code
Standards, Fire and Building Safety Standards and the Handicapped Accessibility
Codes. These codes are in place to assure every building is safe for public use and also
is not damaging the environment in any way. Indiana has its own state codes which are
the Fire Code, Fuel Gas Code and Mechanical Code. Commercial buildings have even
more regulations to follow such as accessibility to all people. Without these codes and
regulations, architects or contractors may not even realize they’ve made a mistake in
the design.

Floor Load Span (A3.1.6)
The library’s floor is solid cast-in-place concrete which is incredibly strong in
compression strength which is necessary to support such an immense weight of the
building. Choosing pre-cast concrete would have been a more convenient choice but
would’ve decreased the lifetime of the library due to it being hollow.

Roof Deck Design (A3.2.2)


Like everyone else I incorporated a green roof into my building. Its is on the roof
of the first floor but to access it you must enter through the second floor. I wanted to
make it an area for people visiting the library to be able to relax and read or study on.
The vegetation on the roof is just grass and trees but it adds great contrast compared to
other libraries.

Roof Joist Design (A3.2.2)


For the joists in my library are able to hold the load of the green roof above on the
first floor and the standard roof on the second floor. If I chose the wrong joist type then
the structural integrity would drastically decrease as we have even more weight to deal
with due to all of the layers included in the green roof that allow plants to flourish. The
green roof was incorporated to attract people but also be environmentally efficient by
providing a large amount of vegetation. It is also a lounge area for visitors to go out and
read/study which is a great addition for a library.

Structural Beam and Girders(A3.2.7)


For the library’s beams and girders I did the beam calculations to find the right beam
types and girder types to use in my building. The beam type I calculated for ended up
being W18x45 which runs horizontally throughout the upper roofing of both the first and
second floor. This beam type can support a maximum of 154,800 pounds. The girder
type I used is W18x130 which runs perpendicular to the beams along the entire ceiling.
These can withstand, at maximum, 580,500 pounds. Doing the calculations for your
beams is very helpful as it allows you to choose a beam that is sufficient enough to
support the load but also weighs the least, reducing cost and unnecessary weight as it
already has to hold the green and regular roofs.

Wastewater Discharge(A.3.3)
To calculate the displacement of water on the site I had to know the distance from
the sewer main to the library which was 435 feet. Once you know that you have to find
the difference between the invert elevation of the main times the crown elevation of the
main plus half of the diameter of the pipe in feet. The equation turned out to be
766.05-(767.05+½ 12”) divided by 435 feet which equals .027. This fits the requirement
as the minimum required slope is 2% and we have a 2.7% slope.

Water Pressure Calculations(A3.3.1)


Before constructing a building you must calculate the water pressure of the
building. The first step is finding static head by finding difference between the source
and distance it must travel. The static head for the Keystone Library turned out to be
91.8 feet. You then divide by 2.31 (feet of water psi) to get 39.74 cubic feet/sec as the
dynamic head. Head loss is next and you need to refer to the formula hart and find the
according pipes with the correct diameter to get the length of the pipe. You sum this with
the distance in feet from 3.6 miles, giving you 19,099.7 feet. After plugging in all
variables I came to the answer of 36.3 psi which is less than the minimum, 40 psi which
just means we will require a pump.

Storm Runoff and Retention/Detention Pond Size(A3.4.5)


Calculating how much runoff you have from your site is necessary in determining
whether or not you will require a retention or detention pond on site. The formula used
to calculate runoff is CfCiA. Cf is a constant based on the return period and length of the
storm. C is dependant on surface material, I is based on the intensity of rainfall and A
being are in acres. For every new material you had to do the equation again because
the variable C changed. You also have to calculate pre-development separate from
post-development in order to find the difference. The flow rate for the Keystone library
during a 10 year 1 hour storm is .53231 cubic feet/sec and during a 100 year 1 hour
storm is .98879 cubic feet/sec. My site would also require a pond which would be .1
acres in size.

Conclusions
The library I built is very environmentally friendly due to the addition of the green
roof which will reduce air pollution and provides vegetation to the building. This is
significant because many buildings hardly take into consideration their effect on the
environment and the long term effects. The most difficult part of this project was
completing the water pressure calculations because I confused myself by using the
incorrect formula equation and not following the process correctly. I figured it out after
re-reading the assignment and after that it was quite simple. I also had to schedule what
I would work on and on what day and I stuck to it which allowed me to meet this
deadline with less stress. I think if I had been given sufficient time I would have
extended the library to make a section for children alone, such as having educational
kids’ books and other appliances. Overall, I’m happy with how my library turned out
because I learned a lot about how many steps are actually needed in order to get a
building from blueprint to site. It also showed me I’m capable of making something
which can be used to create a house in the real world.
