Assignment: Who is the best artist and why?

Rate the artist in the order of how you feel is the best art.

1. Leonardo da Vinci
-Leonardo’s drawings of women are so realistic and portray such beauty with little effort.

2. Peter Paul Rubens


-The amount of detail that Rubens puts into his art is amazing. It shows muscle curves
and pieces of hair.

3. Rembrandt
-A bunch of his drawings are unfinished but show a lot of time and thought put into them.

4. Michelangelo
-Michelangelo has a diverse set of drawings. It consists of people sitting in different
positions, to buildings, to the human anatomy.

5. Albrecht Durer
-I can’t put my finger on exactly what but something about his work makes me dislike it. I
can’t figure out if it’s the colors, or the topics but I don’t enjoy his work as much.

Leonardo da Vinci
Leonardo was born April 15, 1452 and died May 2, 1519 in Italy (also
worked in Milan). He was a painter, sculptor, architect, inventor, and military
engineer and draftsman. His most famous works are: “The Vitruvian Man”,
“The Last Supper”, and the “Mona Lisa”.
Michelangelo
Michelangelo was born March 6, 1475 and died February 18, 1564. He
lived and worked in Rome as a painter, sculptor, architect, and poet. His most famous works
were the frescoes on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel though Michelangelo viewed himself as
an Italian Renaissance sculptor.
Albrecht Durer
Durer was born May 21, 1471 and died April 6, 1528 in Nurnberg, Germany. In 1494 he traveled
to Italy where the culture inspired his artwork. He was a painter and a printmaker in the high
renaissance. His most famous work is the Knight, death, and the devil, Saint Jerome in his
study, and Melencolia
Peter Paul Rubens
Rubens was born June 28, 1577 and died May 30, 1640 as a Flemish baroque/baroque artist in
Europe. He was a painter and a printmaker most known for his artwork called
Rembrandt

3. Changing a style
Compare Picasso’s early drawings to his late work.

How are the early drawings and how is the late work. Compare the two citing examples from
what you saw.

Find a quote from Picasso that might reveal why he changed his style.
