Persuasive Speech: Audience Assessment
Specific Goal :My audience will agree with my point of view at the end of my presentation and
will understand why mobile devices are not good for relationships
Type of Claim: This is a claim of ___Fact___
Ethos: Primary Ethos:
1. Competence: I am a teenager with a phone and have had relationships before
(romantically or not romantically) and I believe that phones do have a negative impact on
the relationship you have with someone.
2. Fairness : I will state what the counterargument is and the I will refute it by saying the
claim.
Secondary Ethos : I will cite all of my authoritative references out loud at least once in my
speech.
NOTE: A minimum of five references is required in each speech. If you selected a number less
than five, stop now. Go back and find more authoritative references.
Audience Assessment : Most of my audience will be uniformed or favorable to my argument that
mobile devices affect relationships negatively.
Adaptation to Audience Attitude :
1. Common ground : I will express the pros and cons to using a mobile device in
relationships
2. Latitude of acceptance : I feel like the audience will accept my proposition because I will
have study’s and data backing up my points.
Baby Steps : I have made sure that I argue against the counterclaims and that they know what
point I am trying to get across.
Pattern of Organization : my pattern of organization will be refutation

Mobile devices affect relationships negatively
Introduction
I. Hook: We all have used phones and we all have had a relationshi[ woth someone, whether
that is your mom, dad, siblings, counsins, boyfriends, girlfriends, etc. But how do those two
connect to each other? Phones are tying relationships together and making them “easier to
connect with someone” but is it really easier to connect with someone through a screen? My
answer is no! Mobile devices affect any relationship negatively.
II. Ethos: I have a family and friends and we all use our phones to contact on another but in
times where we have to talk face to face the phone is just a distraction and we end up being on
our phones more than talking to that specific person.
III. Proposition (or Hint at Proposition) :Mobile devices affect relationships negatively .

Transition : My first point is that using a phone can result in poor conversational skills

1. When you use a Phone you can become so caught up in it that you only start to
be able to talk through a screen and it can become harder to communicate in real
life with someone because you are so used to talking through a screen.

Transition: my next claim is that a phone can be distraction when you are with someone
1. Phones can distract you while you are with someone
1. Many times that i have been on a date the guy has pulled out his phone and
been on it but this just one of the distractions.
2. James Roberts the author of Too Much of a Good Thing: Are you Addicted to
your smartphones said, “When one partner constantly checks his or her phone it
sends an implicit message that they find the phone (or what’s on it) more
interesting than you”.
3. “ Geiser (2002) cited in Srivastava (2006) observed couples at restaurant tables
and found many occasions where one partner was taking a call while the other
was texting or looking away. This perhaps shows that relationships on phones
are prioritised at the expense of relationships with people in the surrounding
