RHYTHM

Scope and Sequence


KR1 Demonstrate a steady beat using body percussion, instruments, the voice, and movement.
KR2 Imitate, perform, and move to rhythmic patterns (sounds and silences) and steady beat using body percussion, instruments, the
voice, and movement.
KR3 Read rhythmic patterns using standard and/or iconic notation.
KR4 Respond to music using locomotor and non-locomotor movement.
KR5 Identify contrasts in long and short sounds.
KR6 Improvise simple rhythmic patterns using body percussion, instruments, the voice, and movement.
1R1 Identify, demonstrate, and respond to contrasts between melodic rhythm and steady beat using the voice, instruments, body
percussion, and movement.
1R2 Read, notate, compose, and perform rhythmic patterns including quarter notes ( a), paired eighth notes (s, jj), and quarter
rests (q) using iconic, stick and standard notation using the voice, instruments, body percussion and movement.
1R3 Improvise simple rhythmic patterns using body percussion, instruments, the voice, and movement.
2R1 Read, notate, compose, and perform rhythmic patterns including previously studied durations, half note ( f), tied notes, half rest
(r), whole note ( g), and whole rest (t) using standard notation using the voice, instruments, body percussion and movement.
2R2 Identify like and unlike rhythmic phrases.
2R3 Respond to meter by using locomotor and non-locomotor movement.
2R4 Create and improvise simple rhythmic question-and-answer phrases by using the voice, instruments, and movement.
2R5 Create and improvise accompaniments including rhythmic ostinati by using the voice, instruments, body percussion and
movement.
2R6 Identify, define, and apply knowledge of barlines, measures, and iconic time signatures ( !#$)
3R1 Read, notate, compose, and perform rhythmic patterns including previously studied durations, sixteenth notes ( dop), single
eighth note ( j), eighth rest ( w), and dotted half note ( i) using standard notation using the voice, instruments, body
percussion, and movement.
3R2 Identify, demonstrate, and respond to strong and weak beat in a given meter.
3R3 Divide rhythms into measures using bar lines.
3R4 Identify, demonstrate, and respond to sets of beats grouped in twos and threes by using the voice, instruments, and movement.
3R5 Create and improvise rhythmic question-and-answer phrases by using the voice, instruments, and movement.
3R6 Create and improvise accompaniments including rhythmic ostinati by using the voice, instruments, body percussion and
movement.
4R1 Read, notate, compose, and perform rhythmic patterns including previously studied durations, dotted quarter followed by an
eight note (hj), triplets (r3ry ), and eighth quarter eight (jaj) using standard notation using the voice, instruments, body
percussion, and movement.
4R2 Identify the meanings of the upper and lower numbers in simple time signatures ( ’ U T L).
4R3 Use barlines to divide rhythms into measures according to the meter signature.
4R4 Improvise rhythms within specified guidelines using traditional and contemporary sound sources.
4R5 Compose short rhythmic phrases within specified guidelines using traditional and contemporary sound sources.
5R1 Read, notate, compose, and perform rhythmic patterns of increasing complexity using standard notation using the voice,
instruments, body percussion, and movement.
5R2 Identify the meanings of the upper and lower numbers in compound time signatures ( E).
5R3 Identify tempo markings.
5R4 Improvise increasingly complex rhythms within specified guidelines using traditional and contemporary sound sources.
5R5 Compose short original compositions within specified guidelines using traditional and contemporary sound sources.
