Olympics are the goal

Fastest in history but striding towards more.
Bacchus Marsh athlete, Nelson Banigo
has recently been acknowledged for his
outstanding performances at the Little
Athletics Victoria Region and State
Championships. Nelson set three new
Under 9 Victorian Best Performances in the
70 metres, 100 metres and 200 metre events.
Nelson ran 9.82 seconds for the 70 metres,
13.64 seconds for 100 metres and 28.10 for the
200 metres.
His mother Jennifer said Nelson was born
to run.
“From the age of two he would run
everywhere, he never walked,” she said.
At the age of six his parents registered him
for little athletics at Melton, to burn some of
his energy. Not long after Nelson joined the
Bacchus Marsh Centre in Under 8 where he
dominated on the track, setting new records
in all available track events. It wasn’t until
Under 9 that Nelson was old enough to
compete at Region and State Championships.
In his first taste of this level of competition
he excelled, winning four gold medals and
setting three new State records. Nelson
qualified for the State Championships
in March at Lakeside Stadium where he
continued to dominate becoming the State
Champion in the 70 metres, 100 metres, 200
metres and 400 metres. This achievement
was a first for the Bacchus Marsh Centre.
Centre President, Maria Downes, said we
have had athletes win three gold but never
four gold medals. as well as three Victoria
records.
“We are all so very proud of his
achievements. Nelson’s times have also
bettered the Australian records which we
are currently awaiting verification from
the Australian Little Athletics board,” Ms
Downes said.
Nelson idolises Usain Bolt and hopes to one
day follow in his footsteps, competing at the
Olympics in the 100 metres. Meanwhile,
Nelson’s short-term goals are to once again
represent Bacchus Marsh at the State Little
Athletics Championships and hopefully
represent his school, Melton Christian
College at the Victorian School Sports
Championships, and maybe even get the
opportunity to progress to the Australian
School Sports Championships.
When asked what he liked most about little
aths, Nelson said he just likes running.
“My favourite event is the 70-metre sprint.
I liked meeting new kids at the Region and
State competitions and hope to meet up with
these athletes again next season”.
While Nelson has excelled in his short little
athletics career, younger brother Elliot looks
set to continue the tradition already having
set a couple of records at the Bacchus Marsh
Little Athletics Centre. Sister Naomi still
must wait another year before she can join
her brothers on the track.

Initially the date for completion of
these roadworks was 11 May, then
moved out to 25 May and now the
completion date of works is 1 June. But

Member for Buninyong Geoff Howard
said this date is currently scheduled
based on the current weather forecast
and information from VicRoads.
“There is a risk of delay if we get more
rain,” he said.
“The major works for the section of
the freeway near Ballan that required
closure of the ramps has been
completed, other than for the road
surfacing. VicRoads had planned to
seal the road by May 11 however, the
extreme wet weather meant the works
had to be postponed until there is
suitable weather conditions and a dry
road surface.”
The signs have been adjusted to reflect
the extended timing of the works.
Mr Howard also commented that the
bridge strengthening works at Pykes
Creek are progressing well.
“VicRoads anticipate reopening the
bridge crossing (ie allowing traffic to
use both carriageways) by the end of
May. Some traffic restrictions may be
required for the Melbourne-bound
traffic periodically to enable completion
of the works, “ he said.

Wow, so much nastiness! I’m sure they have been doing
the best they can. I’d rather they take their time and do it
properly. I drive a truck through these roads many times a
week and I appreciate the improvement they will eventually
bring. Unfortunately resurfacing has to be done in the dry
and our roads crews have been flat out rebuilding roads this
last summer. At some stage they will have to work on the
other bridge. Please be patient people, and please be nice!

station, Fisken street is awash with cars each

In a flyer distributed by Mr Kowarsky to
the street’s residents, he says that parking
by railway patrons is “bound to further
increase with trends of rail usage and with
the railway station upgrade.”
The concept plan for the Ballan railway
station upgrade, issued by Melbourne Metro
Rail Authority (MMRA), shows a new car
park on the south side of the station.
However, Mr Kowarsky says at a public
information session at the Ballan Mechanics
Institute in late 2017, MMRA officers told
him “parking south of the station would
only be provided if existing spaces north of
the station were lost in the development.”
The Minister for Public Transport Jacinta
Allan said, “commuter car parking is an
important part of the process, which will
consider the possibility of adding parking

isn’t difficult.”
Final design plans for all the stations being
upgraded on the Ballarat Line including
community consultation, are being worked
through progressively with Rockbank
station first on the list.
The Ballarat Line Upgrade is reported to be
completed in late 2019.

The Wombat State Forest is home to many
creatures, great and small, but it is one
particular small creature that Monash
University is seeking volunteer bird watchers
for.
As part of an ongoing conversation research
project, the Eastern Yellow Robin is wanted
in the sights of binoculars or cameras.
Lana Austin from the University said they
are seeking volunteer bird watchers to
resight colour banded Easter Yellow Robins.
“Wombat State Forest has around 100
individual robins uniquely colour banded.
Volunteers with binoculars or cameras are
needed to gather information about these
individuals during the breeding season,”
she said.
Ms Austin said volunteers are assigned a
local site to visit a few times per month until
December, or longer.
“Volunteers record information such as the
presence of individual robins, mate choice
and any nesting attempts via an app called
Kobo. Training is provided for those who
require it.”
Local volunteer Nathan Gregory said at first
it can be a bit tricky to see and work out the
colour band combination on the robins’ legs
“Eastern yellow robins don’t sit still for
very long. But once you get the hang of it, it
becomes a bit addictive and very rewarding.”
Each robins’ unique colour combination
links to their age, sex and genetic information.
Information gathered by volunteers will
enable researchers to understand the genetic
climate adaptation being seen in the robins’.
This information may be used as a model
for management actions of more threatened
species in the future.

Conservationists have renewed
their call for a ban on the opera

kicked on again’’ but was most

habitats were exposed, leading to
foxes taking the young ones from
the holes.

Dirty dumping

A Bacchus Marsh family are
bewildered over why loads of dirt
have been dumped illegally on a
new block of land.
They say 10 small truck loads
of dirt appeared on the block in
Pinnacle Court.
Family spokesperson Kerry
Majewski said the dumping began
about six weeks ago, lasted for
three weeks and then stopped.
“We’ve asked at the blocks next
door where the owners are having
work done but it’s got nothing to do
with them,’’ Ms Majewski said.
“I’ve door-knocked up and
down the street and around the
neighbourhood. People told me
they saw trucks coming and going
but thought nothing of it.
“It has now stopped because there
is simply no more room.’’
Ms Majewski said she had been to
the police who told her it was a civil
matter.
She had also approached the
Moorabool Shire Council who sent
a representative to the site.
“But without a witness or a truck
registration they were powerless to
do anything.’’
She said the dirt appeared to be
from a building site – “it’s just
rubbish,’’ she said.
The block was bought about eight
months ago with a view to having a
house built on it.
“I suppose if nothing turns up we
will just have to remove it ourselves
at great cost.
“It’s just very disappointing,” Ms
Majewski said.

proposed electrification of the rail
line to Bacchus Marsh, in a pre-

Ballarat Rail Action Committee
(BRAC) is a collective of councils
from Moorabool, City of Ballarat,
Brimbank, Melton, Ararat and
the Pyrenees who are working
together to convince the State
Government of the importance of
upgrades to the Ballarat Line train
services.
The BRAC are advocating for
$50 Million to create a detailed
business case for what strategic
works are needed to upgrade the
Ballarat rail Line.
Proposals include increased
line capacity into Melbourne,
electrification to Melton and
potentially Bacchus Marsh, a park
and ride at Warrenheip and a fast
train from Ballarat to Melbourne.

collect views and interest from
commuters and encourage them to
visit council’s website and register
their support or objections.
“The consultation in Moorabool
is critical as the rail line upgrade
affects us and we need to take the
results of this back to the BRAC
table so they can be recognised by
government.”
Mr Croxford said the sample poll
conducted indicated the majority
were overwhelmingly against the
electrification of the rail line to
Bacchus Marsh.
“There were, significantly, some
pretty strong sentiments and
opinions expressed about the
issue but there was also a degree
of misinformation or a gap in
the understanding about the
proposal,” he said.

to prepare a 2018/19 budget bid
for ongoing BRAC advocacy and
community engagement activities,
to allow local conversations to
continue to be held on the current

Every picture tells a story

The Ballan Shire Historical
Society recently accepted a
donation of an album of pho-
tos taken by Jean Rhodes in
1921-22 from Sandra Hooker.
Jean Rhodes lived at Bungeel-
tap homestead after her father
William Rhodes purchased
the property in 1922.
Mr Rhodes completely re-
built the homestead near Mt
Egerton the year he purchased
it, taking it from a Gothic style
circa 1863 building to a large
hipped roof structure with
large chimneys.
Society Secretary Richard
Biden says there appears to be
no connection between Jean
Rhodes and Sandra Hooker.
Mr Biden believes that Mrs
Hooker’s husband found and
purchased the album because
he liked the look of it in a sec-
ond-hand store.
Mr Biden said almost all of
the photo’s in the album are
of no historical interest to the
society.
“There are a couple towards
the end of the almost 100-year-
old album, of the Bungeeltap
Homestead after its renova-
tion. These will be scanned
by the society, catalogued
and kept as a digital file. The
album itself will also be cata-
logued,” he said.
Mrs Hooker contacted the
Historical Society by mail
with an offer to donate the
photo album. Her offer was
accepted, and she posted the
album to them. As a paper-
based Historical Society the
collection comprises newspa-
pers, letters, documents and
photo albums.
“We rely on people to give us
things,” Mr Biden said.
The album does not contain

Initiative
takes root
Responsible for the management and
maintenance of over 18,000 urban and
reserves trees, Moorabool Council has
committed an ongoing $100,000 for the
planting of new and replacement trees across
the Shire.
While an annual budget allocation is made
towards the maintenance of these trees,
there has been a limited budget for new or
replacement trees.
Council’s General Manager Infrastructure,
Phil Jeffrey said this allocation establishes a
budget dedicated specifically to tree planting
and will achieve the objectives of councils
Street Tree Strategy.
“Council recognises and appreciates the
importance of a dedicated tree planting
program for the future.” Mr Jeffrey said.
“Not only are there many environmental
advantages associated with new tree
plantings, there are other advantages
such as improved amenity and beautified
streetscapes, social, health and wellbeing
outcomes as well.”
The new initiative covers the supply,
planting and establishment of trees across
urban areas and towns within the Shire.
Works began in early May on new plantings
which are a blend of natives and exotics,
depending on the location.

Road is
accident
waiting to
happen

Concerned members of Coimadai Primary School have

presented a petition to council.
Containing 60-signatures, the petition was in relation to
current and future traffic on Gisborne road, Coimadai.
Principal Moira Ross spoke, on behalf of the school
community at the May 2 meeting and said this was about
road safety not Hansons Quarry permit application.
“We are extremely concerned about the heavy truck traffic
on Gisborne road that passes the Bennetts Lane turnoff to
Coimadai Primary school daily.
“There are no dedicated turning lanes to the school on either
side of Gisborne road. This is a fatality waiting to happen,”
Ms Ross said.
“Every student that attends the school and all staff members
travel to school by private vehicle, as there is no other option.”
The road is on a slight bend and narrow with a 100kph
speed limit. Ms Ross said lowering the speed limit is “only a
band-aid solution”.
“We need turning lanes so not to hinder north and south
bound traffic. The road needs to be widened with two
turning lanes, and we believe this cost must be met by
Hanson Quarry through VicRoads,” Ms Ross said.
Cr. Tonia Dudzik moved the recommendation that the
petition be received by council and the community’s
concerns be presented in writing to VicRoads.

Saturday in this year’s charity car rally,
raising money for the Bacchus Marsh
Blue Light Branch program organised
by Moorabool’s Police Youth Resource

Over ten days 15 men in ten cars
will take to the roads heading out of
Victoria visiting towns in NSW, South
Australia and Queensland, camping
out most nights either under the stars
in swags, or in caravan parks, driving
a round trip of about 4000 kilometres.

Ivers, a keen young member of the team
will be driving his Ford in his fifth year
of the safari.
Each member of the Safari donates
$100 to kick start their charity efforts,
while the majority of the money raised
is at a one-off event held on the last
night of the rally.
Dimboola’s Victoria Hotel is the venue
for the No Boundaries Comedy night
when the team hits the town on June 2.
Eight Melbourne comedians, many
fresh from the recent Melbourne
International Comedy Festival, will
make the trip to Dimboola (courtesy
of Bacchus Marsh Coaches) donating
their time to grab the mic and take to
the stage.

locals they are in for a laughter filled
night. Safari organiser (former Bacchus

promising to be our biggest pub event

FREE FLU VACCINE FOR ALL CHILDREN 6 MONTHS TO UNDER 5 YEARS
Moorabool Shire Council is offering free Flu
Vaccinations for all children aged 6 months to under
5 Years of age. Flu vaccinations for children under
5 require two doses given a month apart. We will
holding vaccination sessions for the children under
5 on 9 June 2018 (first dose) and the 14 July 2018
(second dose) between 9 am and 12 pm at the Early
Learning Centre at 182 Halletts Way Darley. Bookings
are essential so please call the Environmental Health
team on 5366 7100 and arrange an appointment.
All Children from 6 months to under 5yrs are eligible for this free vaccine.
There has been a significant increase over time to incidence of influenza in children
aged up to five years of age. In addition, data from the Victorian hospital sentinel
surveillance system indicates that 40% of children hospitalised had no identified risk
factors.This makes it essential that – in order to prevent severe illness and deaths – an
immunisation program is available to all children aged 6 months to less than 5 years,
rather than just those with known risk factors.
At Moorabool Shire Council we care about the safety of our wider community, so we
encourage eligible young children to receive the free vaccine while it is available.

Devils too strong for Redan

REIGNING premiers Dar-
ley have regained their
position inside the top six
on the BFNL ladder after
a resounding 57-point win
over the winless Redan last
Saturday.
A blistering eight goals to
one opening term by the
Devils set up the win as they
took a 44-point lead at the
first change.
Ruckman Dylan Reid was
superb all day giving his
‘crumbers’ first use. Through
the roof clearance numbers
were largely responsible in
aiding Darley to (clearly)
their highest possession
winning game for the year.
Reid’s dominance in the
ruck (and follow up work),
allowed the likes of Brian
Graham, Steven Kennedy,
Leigh Spiteri, Luther Baker,
Matthew Young and La-
chlan Herring to accumulate
at will and to their credit,
they didn’t waste the footy.
Ball movement forward
was a positive for the Dev-
ils, in stark contrast to their
opening four rounds when
they looked rushed at times
and often clumsy with their
(forward 50) entries. They
simply made better deci-
sions with their ball use.
The Darley midfield were
prepared to chip it around,
slow it down when needed
and maintain possession.
Low risk entries resulted in a
spike of marks inside 50 that
had an immediate impact on
the scoreboard.
Swingman Mark Hansen (2
goals) led up, marked well
and looked dangerous early.
His ability to compete, bring
the ball to ground and run
in and out of the space when
required had a telling influ-
ence on Darley’s forward
efficiency.
Brian Graham (seven goals)
was the beneficiary of this
refreshing space. The star
midfielder rested forward
and was simply too good for
any match-up Redan sent
his way. Graham, who has
kicked goals in every game
this year could well have
finished with a bag of ten
(goals) given his six behinds.
Three of those misses were
comfortable set shots by his
standards inside 40 metres.
So, he’s human after all.
Darley coach Heath Scot-
land was industrious yet
again at the selection table
making four changes from
their round four win over
Lake Wendouree.
Gun forward Ryan Closter,
utility Abe Kur, young-
ster Jessie Pattison and re-
bounder Jordan Spiteri were
all left out of the side. Goal

from injury while Tate Stone
and Lachlan Herring were
rewarded for their impres-
sive reserve grade form and

BOMBSHELL: KEY DEVIL CALLS IT QUITS

Premiership winning
Darley forward Ryan Closter
has officially retired.
The 32-year old informed
the Club of his intentions
late last week much to the
disappointment of the wider
Darley faithful.
Closter’s importance to the
side was considered pivotal
to the Devils flag defence
in season 2018. In a recent
pre-game radio interview
I was keen to suggest
to Darley Coach Heath
Scotland that Closter wasn’t
far off breaking a game
wide open, unbeknown
that it was more likely he
would not play again. The
mobile forward played three
games this season, kicked a
goal in each game and was
building nicely as his touch
and fitness progressed with
game time.
In what has been a huge blow
for the Club, they respect the
decision and remain positive
moving forward. With
Closter’s retirement comes
opportunity for the next
Devil that lay in waiting. Big
shoes to fill I know, but with
the young talent currently on
show and the senior players
awaiting return, there may
just be a perfect fit.

remember Closter’s aerial
domination in their 2015
drought breaking Grand

wasn’t a true reflection on
his forward prowess. It
would be his nine shots on
goal (seven behinds) and
multiple score involvements
that would tell the story. His
inaccuracy in front of the
sticks probably cost him the
Best on Ground Medal.
Closter played 147 senior
games (24 games at Darley)
at five different clubs and
kicked 266 goals (27 goals for
Darley) in a career spanning
over 12 seasons.
Work commitments, the
risk of injury and a young
family have been the catalyst
behind his decision.

The Cross Country Open
Day was held on Saturday
at Bullengarook Reserve.
Athletes from Altona, Bac-
chus Marsh, Coburg, Gis-
borne, Kyneton, Melton
City, Seaford and Werribee
Centres participated, with
medals presented to the first
three placegetters in each
age group and certificates
awarded to all participants.
The Under 7 athletes con-
tested the 1000 metre course
with Toby Beattie (Altona)
a clear winner for the Boys,
while only three seconds
separated Matthew Downey
(Gisborne) and Taylan Tow-
ers (Gisborne) for 2nd and
3rd respectively. Myah
Estlick (Bacchus Marsh)
finished in 1st place for the
girls with Hannah Tum-
bri (Coburg) in 2nd place.
The Under 8 athletes also
competed over the 1000m
course, and in the closest
race for the day, Jameson
Chuck (Gis) pipped team
mate Robert Van Emmerick
(Gisb) for the gold medal,
with Deegan Doyle (BM)
claiming bronze. Bacchus
Marsh athletes Aisha Lidg-
ett-Egan, Matilda Flanagan,
Imogen Lidgett-Egan were
the top three placegetters in
the girls division.
The Under 9 & 10 athletes
completed the 1500 metre
course with Nicholas Ide
(BM) claiming line honours,
then Oliver Carr (BM) 2nd
and Isaac Tumbri (Coburg)
3rd. Harli Lennon (Seaford)
made the long trip to Bullen-
garook well worth it, with
a strong run to the take the
win; Sarah Burton (Melton)
and Ava Cook (BM) finished
in 2nd and 3rd place. Wil-
liam Flanagan (BM) claimed
victory in the Under 10s
race with Taj Susnjara (Gis)
crossing the line to claim the
silver medal and Oskar Kuc-
era (BM) taking the bronze.
Mackenzie Estlick (BM)
dominated the girls race
with Anna Seymour (BM) in
2nd place.
Mitchell Wells cruised
home for a convincing win
in the Under 11 2000m event
while Bacchus Marsh ath-
letes Noah Noorman and
Ymir Travisson Heafield
were the next to cross the
finish line. Freya Lidgett-
Egan (BM) was a narrow
winner over Sierrah Chuck
(Gis) while Tyrah Doyle fin-
ished on the podium to win
a bronze medal.
Over 2000 metres, Ben Van
Emmerik (Gis) was first
home for the Under 12 boys
but was pushed right to
the line by Elise Cook (BM)
who dominated for the girls.
Lana Hughes (Kyneton) and
Danielle Ide (BM) were 2nd
and 3rd while Nate Sadhai
(BM) was 2nd in the boys
division.
The Open Age athletes
contested the 3000 metre
distance with Under 13 ath-
lete Jack Flanagan (BM) run-
ning the fastest time in 11.36
minutes, closely followed by
Mitchell Fitzpatrick (Gis),
also Under 13, running 11.37
mins. Tamara Henry Under
13, Bridget Henthorn Under
14, Kirsty Bresnan Under
15 and Keely Rich Under 16
were all winners represent-
ing their Centre, Bacchus
Marsh.
One of the highlights of
the day was watching the
parents race, with the men
running over the 3000 metre
distance and the ladies over
the shorter 1500m course.
Gordon Shaw (Gis) was a
clear winner in the men’s
event while Beck Beattie
(Altona) just snuck home to
claim the ladies event.
Next week the Centre’s
Cross Country meet will be
held at Myrniong Recrea-
tion Reserve commencing at
10.30am.
