Grease Thickeners
Lithium soap greases have been around for many years and
their multipurpose nature allows them to satisfy over 80% of all
applications. However, for severe applications, other
technologies may have advantages.
12.16
APPENDIX
Grease Compatibility
“RULE OF THUMB”
As a general rule of thumb, it is best to assume that all different
types and brands of greases are NOT COMPATIBLE with each
other. When changing from one grease to another it is best to
completely clean the grease cavity and lubricated surfaces. If
this is not possible, a thorough purge of the system should be
performed.
12.17
APPENDIX
Note: Gaps exist (in the penetration numbers) between the official
NLGI grades. This allows for unofficial half grades e.g.) a grease
with a penetration of 300mm could be designated as a 1.5 grade.
