Advantages

The main advantages are:

 High propulsive performance at low speeds. unlike the turbojet, they
are able to operate reasonably efficiently at very low travel speeds

 Low SFC (specific fuel consumption). At the operating speeds of these

engines, the specific consumptions are notably lower than those of a
turbojet or turbofan

 The turboshaft can work in all types of climates and geographic

locations, and also work with almost any liquid that flows through a
tube or hose and that burns with the air as an oxidizer.

 Much higher power-to-weight ratio than piston engines. Turboshaft

engine offers an excellent power/weight ratio even at high
temperatures.

 Typically smaller than piston engines

 Low vibrations. Freedom from vibration-permits lighter propeller

sections and mounting structure.

 Stable operation at high altitudes and at high temperatures

 Ability to run at cold temperatures below -30 °C without preheating

Disadvantages
 Loud
 Gear systems connected to the shaft can be complex and break down
 Cost is very high (expensive)
 Less sensitive to changes in energy demand compared to piston
engines

Applications

Because it’s ow weight, minimal vibration, silent operation, stable

performance at high altitudes and in extreme climatic conditions makes it
ideal for installation in (un)manned applications as a substitute for piston
engines, especially in harsh climatic conditions.
Turboshafts are also widely used for industrial and marine installations,
including power and pumping stations, hovercraft and ships (Ticonderoga).
Here is a comparison table:
 Honeywell Turboshaft T55
At its introduction, the T55 produced 1,600 shaft horsepower (SHP). Several
decades and generations of development later, today’s T55 produces 4,800
SHP and powers the CH-47 Chinook to a maximum speed of 196 mph (170
knots).
 Honeywell Turboshaft LTS101
Honeywell’s LTS101 turboshaft engine is one of the most successful
helicopter engines ever built. Since being certified in 1975, over 2,100
engines have been delivered to customers worldwide.
The LTS101 offers the “hot and high” performance that helicopters need to
lift heavier loads and to get the job done in fewer trips — helping you drive
down operating costs.

LTS101 benefits include:

 Potential 18% increase in helicopter value

 22% increase in OEI power meeting EASA standards
 Increased shaft horsepower
 Honeywell AGT 1500 Battle Tank Turboshaft Engine

The AGT1500 gas turbine engine has been the force behind the Abrams M1
Main Battle Tank (MBT) mobility since the early 1980s. It provides the power,
speed, quick acceleration and quiet operation which have earned the M1
such high marks across all military theatres. It has maneuvered more than
39 million operating miles, and demonstrated outstanding in-service
reliability through the enhancements introduced through the total integrated
engine revitalization (TIGER) program.

Its features include compact design, cold-starting capabilities, instant power,

multi-fuel capabilities and stealthy operation. This engine is the world
standard for tank durability and survivability.
