DISCUSSION.

In choosing the best materials for every part of suitcase, we use the strategy for selection of
materials. In this strategy it has four steps. First, we use screening method by eliminate
candidate materials which is not suitable for the product because of their attributes lies
outside the limits imposed by the design. Next step is ranking by listing all possible materials
according to their capability to give the best performance for certain application. To know all
the possible material that suitable for those part, we need to determine the density and young
modulus of the materials. Then find the section in Ashby chart and compare the characteristic
of every materials.

The second step is we use the supporting information that we obtain to compare every
material and choose the best out of it. The outcome of the screening step is a shortlist of
every material candidates which satisfy the quality requirements of the design. We all the
details profile for each of the materials such as the weight, price and the graphic. All this
information can be found in handbooks, supplier’s data sheets, CD-based data sources and
the google website. Then we will compare all the information that we have list and we will
compared it to be able to carry out the details of the selection.

Third step, we are competing all the possible materials depend on the same product that
already has in market and run some test and take some feed back for user of the product.
Then, we improvise the materials that already use in market by using another suitable
material which is more tough, light and cheap.

The final step is we list all the materials prescription and all the design requirements for a
component that we need. We list all the prescription through observation on function of
component, design constraints, design objective and the design free variables which we
determined to optimize the component performance. The function, objective, constraints and
the free variable will define the boundary conditions for selecting the best material that will
optimize the performance of every material.
