Argumentative Essay Outline

-How does being bilingual affect one’s sense of self identity?

Thesis: It would have a huge positive affect in a variety of areas and help the person have more
confident. Because the person would feel more needed/important, he/she would have better
creativity than other people who speak one language and those bilingual people find themselves
more useful.

I. The person would feel more needed and important.


A. Recently, the world is becoming more globalized and what organizations want is
those people who can speak more than one language.
1. In 2016, in “The Power of English”, the ambassador of Libya, Tripoli said,
“Most major multinational companies use English to ensure that all their
offices in different countries can talk to each other.” This is exactly why they
need bilinguals.
2. There is an official report that being bilingual makes the person smarter.
B. Also young kids/students will need to learn another language and they need
someone to teach them.
C. There are people wanting to have a translator so they can communicate when
needed.
II. He/she might have a better creativity than other people who only speak one language.
A. Because they can communicate with people from other countries, they can share
and learn a lot of kinds of point of view.
1. In 1922, in “Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus,” the philosopher Ludwig
Wittgenstein wrote, “The limits of my language mean the limits of my world.”
The more words you have, the bigger your sight gets.
2. I actually experienced there is a difference between history in the States and
history in Japan about nuclear bomb dropped in Hiroshima.
B. By learning another culture as you learn its language, the person can include the
differences between his/her own culture and theirs and create something new.
C. The person would be able to find the normal things more important by changing
the point of view.
1. It was after one year since I came to the States when I realized how great my
born country is for the first time.
2. A lot of foreign students miss their own country while they’re in a different
country.
III. Those bilingual people find themselves more useful.
A. If the person can speak English/Chinese for example, he/she can talk with people
from all over the world.
1. English is the most spoken language in the world as lingua franca, which
means the most common language for people’s second language.
2. If the person has an ability to speak English and Chinese, he/she would have
the greatest difference than other people.
B. In a city, he/she can help travelers to have a better visit by using their language
and help them understand.
C. When the person has to look for a job, being bilingual will make his/her
advantaged than others’.
