Publisher’s Note

TWO YEARS
IN A ROW!

WELCOME TO THE NEWEST issue of our award-winning Baltimore Bride

magazine, our yearly showcase of all the reasons Charm City is the best place
to get married. This year is no exception, with our pages chock full of great
photos, wedding inspiration, and beautiful features, covering everything from
bridal fashion to wedding cakes. One of my favorite pieces is our “Ultimate
Venue Guide,” which lists 59 ideal locations for your wedding. And while not
every great Baltimore venue is included, it’s one of the most complete lists
I’ve seen, from farms and gardens to mansions and estates to new kids on the
block. I guarantee brides and grooms will be dog-earing pages in that section.
For the second year in a row, we were given a prestigious Folio Award in
New York, where the magazine industry gathers to recognize editorial con-
tent and design work. Our “Ozzie” recognized Baltimore Bride for its design,
which includes our photo shoots, feature layouts, and cover. I am very appre-
ciative to our managing editor, Janelle Erlichman Diamond, and art director
Staci Lanham, who truly love what they do. (And I think that comes across in
this and every issue.)
There are some exciting transformations coming to Baltimore Bride in
2019—but we promise the local focus of our magazine won’t ever change.

Flower Girls
SOKOLOV PHOTOGRAPHY

MY OBSESSION WITH FLOWERS began with my own wedding. I wanted to

do something different than traditional bouquets, so I had my florist create
oversized wrist corsages for my bridesmaids. The impact of those blossoms
has stayed with me, and (nearly) 14 years later, it’s still one of my favorite
recollections from my wedding. What is it about flowers that is so ineluctably
brilliant? Their fleeting beauty? Their intoxicating smell? How they can
transform the simple into the exquisite? As Mary Ellen LaFreniere of Steelcut
Flower Co., whose flowers grace our cover, says in our issue, “It’s the only living
Chesapeake Beach element at the wedding—besides the guests.” But even in my day-to-day life, an
Resort & Spa arrangement of blooms makes me instantly happy (as my husband knows).
That is selfishly one of the reasons we dedicated a good portion of this issue
to flowers. (Luckily, Baltimore Bride art director Staci Lanham, on the right,
shares my passion.) But the thing about weddings and flowers is they can be
merged in so many different ways. We touch on edible flowers, favor ideas, a
bridal shower with an incredible pick-your-own flower cart, and six strategies
to keep your wedding flora living long past their expiration date.
Of course, it’s not all flowers. We also have a comprehensive venue list, a
the spectacular feature about the new trend of micro-weddings, a bridal fashion shoot I’m
bay views are the incredibly proud of, and seven fantastic Local Love ceremonies.

We love a braid. “Braids are back and cooler than
ever,” says Amy Wild, owner of Vintage Veils. They feel
whimsical yet timeless, fun, and romantic. There are
fishtails and braided updos, Dutch braids and milkmaid
braids, braids that are long and loose, and ones that are
sideswept. A bride with a braid is a happy bride.

Kelsey
WHEN DANNY LUCAS ASKED the bartender
at Stalking Horse to give him her phone num-
ber, he entered it under “Dreamgirl” in his

& Danny
cell. Not to spoil the rest of this piece, reader,
but he married her. Fast forward to their
very first date: Danny was late, and Kelsey
Haywood, AKA Dreamgirl, suffering from
a stomach bug but not wanting to cancel,
AUGUST 19, 2017 threw up in the bathroom of Metropolitan.
Not an auspicious start but still promising
enough for a second date. It was a joyful and
romantic Fourth of July get-together with
friends and fireworks that truly cemented
their relationship. Five years later, on another
July evening, Kelsey and Danny had packed
a picnic dinner and watched Best In Show
at the American Visionary Art Museum’s
Flicks From the Hill. Unbeknownst to Kelsey,
Danny had been carrying around an engage-
ment ring for six months, waiting for the per-
fect moment. As they walked toward home,
Danny put down all their stuff, got down
on one knee, and nervously held up the ring
box—upside down. There was hugging and
sobbing and kissing and calls to their fami-
lies. “It was perfect,” says Kelsey. “Most spon-
taneous night ever. I was in sweats. No make-
up on. It was the best night ever.”
Well, topped only by a flawless wedding.
Loving the vibe of Tulum, Mexico, with its
low-key glam—but not wanting a destina-
tion wedding—they turned the Chesapeake
Bay Beach Club into a black-tie jungle bash.
“Tulum is bohemian, but so stylish,” says
Kelsey. “It’s laid back, but everything is beau-
tiful. With Tulum, on one side of the street it’s
beach, and on the other side, it’s jungle.” That
was their goal, achieved with elements like
stunning protea, gold spray-painted palms,
and a ceremony overlooking the water.
The two opted out of a first look. So,
Danny saw Kelsey for the first time as she
walked down the aisle. After the ceremony,
the newlyweds slipped away for some por-
traits. “We were walking to the beach to take
pictures, and it’s kind of a big step into the
sand,” remembers Kelsey. Danny instinctively
put out his arm to help his new wife. They
walked the last step together. Says Kelsey,
“We were looking at each other and laughing.
I was just so giddy.”

“WE MET AS A GYM TEACHER and an Eng-

lish teacher—a tale as old as time,” jokes
Kat Locke, the English teacher in ques-
tion. Kat and Nick Jones first crossed paths
while working at Baltimore IT Academy.

Kat
First, they spent time together planning a
field day. Then they took the middle-school
kids to laser tag. There were adult-only
happy hours, but with other co-workers.

& Nick
“The kids knew we were in love with each
other before we knew,” cracks Kat. To Nick
and Kat, they were just colleagues spend-
ing time together at group outings. “But
we would always be the last two there,”
JULY 22, 2017
confesses Nick. Their first official date
was appropriately a baseball game: Yan-
kees (her team) vs. Orioles (his) at Camden
Yards. Much to her chagrin, the Orioles
won. “But I was the real winner,” she smiles.
After a springtime proposal in Fells
Point, the two started wedding prep.
Despite growing up with a father in the
business—he owned a very busy tuxedo
shop—Kat was feeling a bit overwhelmed.
Expanding their venue search criteria, the
two found Wyndridge Farm in York County,
about an hour from Baltimore. It promised
farm-crafted beers and cider and a spot big
enough for their large families, friends, and
fellow teachers. Because the nuptials were
in Pennsylvania, Nick’s mom called it their
destination wedding. “It was a nice break
from the city,” says Kat.
Their wedding day was hot and rainy and
bursting at the seams with their quirky per-
sonality, including a Sandlot-themed cake.
They waited until the 11th hour to decide
on their ceremony location. “My dad, he
wanted it for me so badly,” says Kat of get-
ting married outside at the wooden chapel
nestled in the misty, green hills. Her col-
lege roommates, groomsmen, and her dad—
in his perfectly tailored custom tuxedo—
carried and set up all 220 chairs minutes
before the ceremony began.
Kat and Nick had their first look in a
meadow wet with rain. Says Kat, “I was
kind of running in the field. My dress got
muddy, and it wasn’t perfect, but it was per-
fect for me. I’m not put together. I’m wear-
ing this beautiful gown, but I’m still me.”

Local Love photographs by RENÉE HOLLINGSHEAD PHOTOGRAPHY

ON A COLD AND RAINY night in the winter

of 2013, Erin O’Donnell and Luis Velez
both found themselves at the Rec Room’s
two-for-one beer night in Towson. As Erin
approached the bar, she saw Luis standing
there, a beer in each hand. Erin sidled up
to Luis and said, “You are way too cute to
be looking for someone to give that beer
to.” Luis was, in fact, looking for his room-
mate, but knew what the correct answer
was. He handed the beer to Erin and said,
“Well, I guess it’s for you.”
Things moved quickly from there.
“When we met, we were both ready to
be in a relationship that was real,” says
Erin. They were living together after six
months. A few years later, on a freezing-
cold New Year’s Eve, they headed to what
Erin thought was a get-together with a
couple of friends. The boys headed up to
the roof deck while the girls were hanging
out in the warm kitchen. When they went
to find their beaus, Erin was shocked to
discover the deck transformed with cafe
lights, bouquets of roses, champagne, 25 of
their closest friends, and Luis down on one
knee. She said yes.
They wanted to be married the following
spring, so they enjoyed their long engage-
ment and bought and remodeled a home in
that time. Erin had grown up swimming
at Meadbowbrook and had been keeping
an eye out as the Mt. Washington Mill Dye
House opened in the mill complex, where
she had previously shopped with her mom
at Smith & Hawken. It was the perfect
place for their black-tie rustic wedding—
and it was pet-friendly. After their cer-
emony, friends picked up and brought over
their dog, Cato, a yellow lab/basset hound

Erin
mix, for pictures.
“Right after we got married, we went in
to see the reception space—just the two of
us—and that was awesome just in itself,”

& Luis
says Erin, who planned every detail of
their meticulous wedding. “We went to the
dance floor with our logo projected and we
were practicing our dance. It was the first
APRIL 15, 2017 couple minutes of us being husband and
wife. It just felt so natural and good.”

Local Love photographs by KRISTA A. JONES PHOTOGRAPHY

CATHERINE BOBOTEK AND STEPHEN Can-

terbury, who grew up in Baltimore, were
valentines in the eighth grade. They parted
ways as they headed to different high schools
and then reconnected their senior year for
an ice-cream date. “It’s now thousands of
dates later,” jokes Stephen. Even now, says
Katie, “our dates still revolve around food.”
She followed Stephen to the University of
Maryland, and, after graduation, they moved
together to North Bethesda—a middle
ground of sorts for her commute to How-
ard County and his to Washington. Katie
and Stephen worked together to design her
engagement ring because the diamond was
a family heirloom. Once Katie knew the
ring was complete, it became her “life goal”
to figure out where Stephen had hidden it
and when he would propose. A few months
after the ring was finished, Katie’s sister
Sam came in from Mississippi and the three
headed to Washington. Of course, Katie
thought this could be it, but her sister set
her straight: “It’s not happening. You might
as well just enjoy today. This day isn’t about
you.” Turns out, sisters can be good secret
agents. Not only did Stephen propose that
day at the U.S. Botanic Garden’s Bartholdi
Park Fountain, but Sam had the ring hidden
in her purse the whole time. After the shock
wore off, it was time to start planning their
wedding. “I really love the feel of a Southern
wedding, but I also wanted to be in Balti-
more,” says Katie, who at the time was in the
process of buying a house in the city with
Stephen. Evergreen Museum and Library

Katie
offered a unique venue: vast space for an
outdoor ceremony and lawn games, a tent-
ed reception, and a location in Charm City.

& Stephen
The reception décor—monograms, ginger
jars, magnolia leaves, and toile—had filled
Katie’s childhood home and paid homage
to her mother, who had passed away seven
years earlier. Stephen’s dad, Phil Canterbury,
OCTOBER 15, 2016 played an integral role, too. Months into
their planning, Katie had found an old man-
tle at The Loading Dock and he took on the
job of refurbishing it. On their wedding day,
it framed their sweetheart table, filled with
flowers in those ginger jars, of course.

A Conversation With: Floral Designers

THE FLORISTS
WE SAT DOWN WITH six florists who rep-

who they’d order their flowers from. Mary
Ellen LaFreniere grew up on a flower farm
and made her first bouquet to sell at the
farmer’s market when she was just four
years old. Her company Steelcut Flow-

to notice a need for higher-end flowers in
the Annapolis and Eastern Shore area. “I

CLIENTS?
Mary Ellen | Steelcut Flower Co.: My typi-
cal client describes their taste as non-tradi-

ily and friends. They appreciate that flowers
are the only living element at the wedding
(besides the guests!) and expect them to
have personality. They usually opt for simple
linens, place settings, etcetera, so that the
flowers can be the focal point. They tend to
have a deep appreciation for nature, are self-
confident, caring individuals, and love being
surprised by natural textures and shapes in
their floral designs.

Flowers Thriving and it seemed like a shame to let them go
to waste,” says Joffe. “After all of our guests
had the opportunity to enjoy them at the

to do,” she says. “Why trash something that
could bring joy to others?” So, the Monday

after the wedding, Joffe contacted Sinai
Hospital. “We were able to drop off flowers
that afternoon,” she says.
On average, brides and grooms spend
about 10 percent of their wedding budget
on flowers. That means countless roses, pe-
onies, ranunculus, and dahlias discarded at
the end of the night. But for many couples,
the only image that comes to mind when
they think beyond the wedding is a pre-
served bouquet in a shadow box. And while
there is nothing wrong with this method,
there are many unique, and sometimes
lesser known, alternatives to keeping wed-
ding blooms, well, blooming.

FLORAL DYE
Wax & Wane Fiber is a natural dye collec-
tive that creates art with dye extracted from
elements found in nature. “All plants have
an end, and this gives them a new life,” says
Claire Fredrick, who co-founded the busi-
ness alongside partner Ashton Page. The
two met just after graduate school through
an introduction from a mutual acquain-
tance at Maryland Institute College of Art
(MICA), which then led to a lot of time
spent experimenting and playing around
with natural elements. This process caused
their curiosity to soar and influenced them
to start their collective about two and a half
years ago. Page and Fredrick were quick to
realize that flowers and leaves are finicky
and there are many unexpected colors that
come along with the extraction process. Of
course, this is part of what makes their job
so exceptional. For a bride or groom, dye
extracted from their wedding flowers is the
perfect way to commemorate the flowers’
spirit. The extraction can be used to dye a
scarf, shawl, wedding dress—the possibili-
ties are endless. Page and Fredrick’s beauti-
ful process begins with untampered fabric
(chiffon works best) soaked overnight in
vinegar and water. From there, the fab-
ric is laid out and the flowers and leaves
are randomly placed on it. When working
with flowers, the best results come from
the freshest blooms. They suggest extrac-

won’t turn down dried flowers. After the
first layer, they fold the fabric and repeat
with another layer. Then, they begin to roll
the fabric and flower/leaf combination.
This roll is then tightly wrapped with twine
to ensure that the fabric properly receives
the dye from the elements. Once rolled, they
place the bundle directly into a pot to be
steamed for several hours, followed by a full
overnight stay to just sit and soak. These
carefully crafted steps have come from
years of practice and hard work at their
craft, and the end results make this appar-
ent. The entire process is both beautiful and
environmentally friendly, a perfect union.

DONATION
As an event planner in Baltimore, Jennifer
Grove, the founder of Repeat Roses, was
regularly exposed to the mass disposal of
wedding flowers. Although crushing to see,
it birthed an idea. Grove was inspired to
start her own company that would put an

end to trashing the blooms. “Flower dona-
tion brings joy no matter where we spread
the love,” says Grove. “It not only brightens

is over, Repeat Roses picks up the arrange-
ments, restyles the flowers into smaller
groupings, and makes sure all vases and
other rental decor are properly returned.
From there, the flowers are transported to
various donation locations. “In Baltimore,
we work regularly with The Ronald Mc-
Donald House Charities, House of Ruth,
and Gilchrist Hospice,” says Grove. Once
the flowers have wilted, they are retrieved
and moved to a compost location. After just
three years of business, Repeat Roses has
serviced several weddings in the Baltimore
area and hopes to grow more. Services start
at $1,000 and are custom tailored to the
volume of floral arrangements at each event.

While working as a florist with Crimson &

the essence of the flowers in a way that is
both beautiful and unconventional. “When
creating this product, I put my mind in the
space of, ‘What does this bouquet really
smell like? What does it feel like, and how

this initial inspiration in mind, O’Neill

started experimenting, and soon her busi-
ness, Impressed by Nature, based in Cali-
fornia, was born. “It all evolved organically.
I didn’t intend to be in this, but it’s been
so fun and meaningful and has taken me
in so many different directions,” she says.
One aspect of her craft is creating jewelry
from preserved wedding flowers. The pro-
cess has evolved to become not only simple,
but also unique and special to each couple.
Before the wedding, a couple can request a

out and safely package flowers and leaves,

TATTOOS
After her beautiful January 2017 wedding
at the 2640 Space, with its woodsy, wild-
flower vibe, bride Hannah Walker was
searching for ways to preserve her bouquet
when she came across a stunning floral tat-
too and was instantly hooked. “When I be-
gan considering the tattoo, I loved the idea
that I would be carrying my bouquet with
me forever,” says Walker. “It gave me an ex-
cuse to talk about my wedding all day, and
let’s face it, who doesn’t want to talk about
their wedding all the time?” It was some-
thing she hadn’t seen any other bride do be-
fore. As with many of her other tattoos, she

all that really matters.”

Back Story
The Back Story

WHEN JOSH AND I got engaged, we scoped out a few venues around Baltimore but were left
feeling like none of them were truly us. One night, we talked about what we wanted our
wedding to look like, and we came up with a concise list: We wanted to be outside, eat deli-
cious BBQ, drink local beers, and celebrate with friends and family.
Patterson Park became the obvious choice, as it had always provided us with a backdrop
for so many activities and special occasions. It seemed only fitting that this place, in the
heart of our city and so close to our hearts, should be our wedding and reception venue.
One of the best features of having your wedding in Patterson Park is that it’s a public out-
door space, so we didn’t have to work with a preferred vendors list. We weren’t confined to
the set timeframe of a more traditional venue, so guests could walk the grounds of the park,
play lawn games, and socialize without feeling rushed.
Feeling freed from having to work with venue-specific vendors, I decided to do some
research and attempt to grow, dry, and arrange all of the flowers for the wedding. From
March to August, I grew eight different types of flowers in my Baltimore City backyard.
Luckily, a green thumb runs in the family, and my mother and grandmother both dedicated
parts of their gardens to wedding flowers, too. One of the best days I’ll ever remember was
when my mother and grandmother came to my house to arrange the flowers we grew for
every bouquet, boutonniere, and centerpiece. That day was proof that our hard work, just like every-
thing else for the Patterson Park wedding of our dreams, was going to pay off in a truly beautiful way.
