Rogers & Tenbrook Inc., has
been engaged in the hardware
and lumber business for 93
years and has expanded its of-
ferings to fulfill just about any
need a home owner or contrac-
tor requires. The original store
is on Shults Street in Wayland
and the Dansville store on Ma-
ple Street, built in 2008, features
16,000-square-feet of retail
space and also offers kitchen
and bath items for those who
are upgrading or renovating
these areas. The Wayland store
also offers 16-foot drywall
sheets and boom service.
Kevin Kilbourne, president of
the company and owner for the
past 34 years, began his work
career as a part-time employee
of Forbes Tenbrook, former
owner and operator.
For many years, Kilbourne
worked for Mobil Chemical in
Macedon, but when Tenbrook
made the decision to sell his
business and retire, he called
upon his former employee who
had impressed him with his
work ethic and knowledge of
the business all those years be-
fore to see if he would consider
buying. After much thought
and consultation with family
and friends, the decision was
made to move the family back
to the Wayland area and con-
tinue the tradition of service to
the community Forbes Ten-
brook had provided for nearly
60 years.
Kilbourne is quite proud of
the fact that his 23 full-time em-
ployees and seven to nine part-
time employees (depending on
the season and work load) are
nearly evenly divided between
males and females.
Employees are very accom-
modating and always available
to assist a novice find just the
exact part they need for home
repairs or contractors who are
building major projects.
Kilbourne also feels it is
always best to support local
businesses whenever possible
and cites as an example having
a local Amish resident make the
steel inserts for the outside burn
pits sold at both stores.

Variety of Amish products popular at Workshop

The result became Spring-
water Amish Workshop,
Livingston County’s premier
retailer of high-quality wood
products, handmade by
Amish craftsmen.
“When it began, Don
handled the whole business
himself,” said office manager
Erin Moore. “But due to our
success, we now have six em-
ployees.”
Don Haywood is president
of the company.
Since the business opened
its doors at 7936 Mill St., it has
sold products including stor-
age buildings, gazebos, green-
houses, animal enclosures
(horse, dog and chicken),
outdoor furniture, solid wood
interior furniture, metal car-
ports, crafts and even wooden
children’s toys and furniture.
“Our most popular items
are our storage buildings,”
said Moore.
Springwater Amish Work-
shop offers three different
kinds of siding: Smart Siding,
vinyl and board and batten,
the latter a system of alternat-
ing wide boards and narrows
wooden strips (called battens).
Moore said all of the build-
ings are made by the Amish
of Pennsylvania in the Wil-
liamsport area. They are able
to transport buildings up to
14-feet-by-40-feet, and if a
customer needs something
larger, the Amish builders will
come to the customer’s loca-
tion and build on site.
Springwater Amish Work-

for their building with cash
or check. Customers can also
take advantage of the option
of rent-to- own with no credit

said the most important thing
is to have a professional install
and service it regularly. He
recommends having pellet

Most of his business is peo-
ple who want a gas stove or
fireplace insert for decoration.
“But gas is still the best en-

“All three fuels are safe and
efficient if properly installed
and used.”
Briggs stressed he uses cer-
tified employees to install and
service the units he sells, as
opposed to other businesses
which outsource the work to
outside installers.
He doesn’t recommend
homeowners try to install a
fireplace or stove on their own.

nia-based company about 30
years ago with just himself and
a helper. They had an old truck,
one ladder and a lot of hope to

Old Skool continues family tradition of tree care

Professional arborist Max Yantach-
ka believes he had the best education
in the business. He learned from his
dad, and he learned by doing.
“Doing things ‘old school’ is the
motivation we want to keep around
our business,” said Yantachka, who
owns Old Skool Tree Care in Grove-
land.
Cutting and caring for trees is a
family tradition.
Yantachka’s grandfather immi-
grated from Poland, and while he
was a carpenter by trade, he liked to
cut trees on the side. His son (Max’s
father) grew up helping cut and care
for trees. He became so good at it, that
he established a business and was rec-
ognized as an expert throughout the
Rochester region, Yantachka said.
After Yantachka took over, he want-
ed to elevate the business and in April
2016 applied for designation as a lim-
ited liability company.
Recently, Yantachka has added Jer-
ry Pavel as his business partner.
“He has graduated from auto me-
chanic to excellent ground man in
helping me remove trees,” Yantachka
said.
Pavel, who joined Old Skool in 2017,
assists Yantachka in help to bring
limbs safely to the ground.
“Few peple can grasp the full scope
of requirements and skills needed
to be successful at working on the
ground when it comes to trees. Jerry
caught on extremely fast,” Yantachka
said. “When working on trees that
are in tight areas and many obstacles
on the ground, roping is necessary to
control limbs safely to the ground. It
takes great focus and communication
between the man in the tree and the
man on the ground. If either one is out
of sync with each other, damage or
injury is imminent.”
Old Skool Tree Care takes down any
size large tree, does small tree remov-
al, performs heavy or light pruning,
does land grading, spreads top soil,
seeds grass and grinds stumps.
One big thing he recommends to
homeowners is to be aware of their
trees, especially those who have ash
trees.
“The Emerald Ash Borer is a real
problem ... homeowners should keep
close eye on their ash trees,” he said.
“Once a tree is infected, the borer can
kill it within six months. When any
tree becomes dead, then it is hazard-
ous to climb and take down.”
Yantachka said it is wise to inspect
all trees periodically. Bark is meant
to protect a tree and anything on the
outside of the bark is not good. For
instance, mushrooms or fungus grow-
ing on the side of a tree are a sign of
decay.
One should also be careful not to
chip or gouge the bark of a tree.
In addition, grapevines or poison
ivy which wrap around a tree and
climb up it can choke the tree out,
Yantachka said.
He recommends removing any bro-
ken limbs from a tree, even very small
ones.
“A short limb only half an inch in
diameter can injure you or send you to
the hospital if it falls 30 feet,” he said.

Luxury vinyl brings many options to floor projects

This is not your parents’ vinyl flooring.
Luxury vinyl tile flooring is an increasingly popular
flooring product, said Dan Carmen, owner of Dan-
ny’s Village Flooring, 35 East South St., Geneseo.
Carmen, who has worked for more than 25 years
in the flooring industry, said people are drawn first to
the qualities of the product and then surprised at its
variety.
“It’s waterproof, it’s pet proof, it’s kid proof. It’s
very durable,” he said.
Beyond the tile’s toughness and durability is the
ability to create textures, such as giving the vinyl
flooring tile a wood-like appearance.
“Luxury vinyl that looks like wood planking? That
is an outstanding seller,” Carmen said.
The product is available in 16- and 18-inch square
tiles and planks. It also comes with a 30-year warran-
ty.
The luxury vinyl title is able to be produced in ma-
ny different designs and colors, Carmen said.
“You can color your world any way you want,” he
said.
The wood-like version looks so much like a wood
grain that when installed it is difficult to tell the dif-
ference between a real hardwood floor and the luxu-
ry vinyl tile.
Carmen notes that luxury vinyl tile resembling
ceramic tile and even stone are also available, but at
a more affordable price than actual ceramic or stone
floor tiles.
Luxury vinyl tile, introduced around 2006, is not
the same as traditional vinyl sheet flooring, which is
still available.
Traditional vinyl sheet flooring comes in room-
widths and -lengths to minimize or eliminate seams.

Fly Control has solutions for unwanted guests

Things get busy for Scott Koch in May and stay that
way until November.
Koch is the owner and operator of Fly Control Inc.
in Honeoye Falls. He helps residential and commer-
cial clients eradicate everything from cluster flies to
lady bugs – and everything in between.
“A lot of times yellow jackets will eat into some-
one’s house and invade the bedroom, something like
that, so I’ll get all those out,” said Koch. “Pretty much
anything that bothers people.”
Extermination and pest control is something of
a third career for Koch. He spent nine years in the
Army before becoming a math teacher. He taught
for nine years in the Brockport and Rochester City
school districts and even at the University of Roches-
ter before calling it quits.
Koch then made the move to the family business,
taking over for his younger brother, David, who start-
ed farming full time and his father, who started the
business back in the 1970s.
But just because Koch is busy doesn’t mean he
won’t drop everything and come on over if you have
an insect emergency. “For some reason, yellow jack-
ets have an affinity for little kids’ bedrooms – it’s just
an anomaly I’ve observed,” he said. “So if you call
me at 11 o’clock at night and there’s yellow jackets in
your kid’s bedroom, I’ll come over.”
Apart from dealing with the immediate problem
at hand, Koch also tries to educate homeowners on

Take stink bugs, which have been much in the
news in recent years, as an example
“That’s an invasive species from Asia and they like
the wet,” Koch explained. “So if people have drain-
age problems with their house or basement, that’s
usually where you’ll see them. So I’ll treat them with
pesticides, but I also try to educate the homeowner,
on mechanical fixes, the preventative stuff.”
Koch also handles preventative insect manage-
ment for a handful of commercial clients, many of
which are in the agricultural industry. “I do dairy
farms to keep the flies under control,” he said. “That
helps with the cows’ overall health.”
While the term exterminator may conjure images
of gas masks and volatile chemicals sprayed indis-
criminately, that’s far from the truth, said Koch.
“The regular pesticides - they’re extremely safe,
they’re extremely well tested,” said Koch. “New York
State has some of the most restrictive laws on pesti-
cide use.”
And for those still uncomfortable with the idea
of spraying synthetic chemicals, Koch also offers
all-natural, insecticide free options.
“It’s based on cedar oil, cinnamon and garlic –
those are the three main ingredients, so it actually
smells pretty great,” he said. “It’s an all-natural
product I can spray anywhere without any concerns
about safety. It won’t hurt fish or wildlife or anything.
It’s got just a slight, very pleasant odor, almost like
potpourri.”

Back in the 1970s when Modern
Home Kitchen & Bath was just
starting out, dark woods and green
laminate countertops were consid-
ered the height of style.
Now, white and neutral color
schemes, accented by granite or
quartz countertops, tend to draw

“There were a lot fewer choices
at that point of colors and styles,”
said Mike Bugman, general man-

you can safely begin the annual

Gullo’s showroom provides hands-on experience

Touching, twisting and
turning is encouraged in a new
state-of-the-art showroom that
opened this spring at Gullo’s
Kitchen & Bath Design Center,
3225 Genesee St., Piffard.
The showroom has a high
degree of functionality with two
rows of sinks with working fau-
cets. Turn, flip or twist a handle
and water streams from shiny
chrome faucets with ornate
rings or simple designs, or sleek,
brushed nickel or dark-color
faucets.
The hands-on experience is
important for customers, said
owner Don Gullo.
“You can see it, touch it. In-
stead of looking at a faucet, you
can turn it on,” Gullo said.
While customers can cer-
tainly touch and turn faucets
mounted on the display wall,
it’s a different feel or function
then if the faucet is installed on
a sink.
“Ninety percent of the fau-
cets are pull down or pull up. If
it’s on the wall, you can’t use it
that way,” Gullo said. “Our goal
is to help customers use the

several working fireplaces that
have been integrated into the
room, including an indoor/
outdoor fireplace designed to
function both inside and out-
side the home.

n Grays are in among cabinet
colors. So, too, is off-white and a
splash of color. “Everyone is go-
ing to a two-tone kitchen,” Gul-
lo said. “They may choose white
cabinets in an L-shape and then
do an island with a deep cherry
or dark counter. Or, maybe the
kitchen has gray cabinets and
white walk-in cabinets. The
contrast is very popular.”
n Luxury vinyl flooring, a
product introduced to the
industry in 2006, is increasing
in popularity. Customers like
the variety of looks available,
including wood and ceramic,
and the luxury vinyl “wears very
well,” Gullo said.
“It doesn’t look fake and you
will get more of a tile look,” he
said.
