1. An Overview of Industrial Training
1.1 Background
Industrial Training refers to students’ work experience in Information Technology (IT)
practice environment either private or government organisation. In Open University
Malaysia, all IT undergraduate MUST complete at least 16 weeks of Industrial Training
course with 6‐credit value, as one of the requirements prior to graduation.
Students should note that Industrial Training is an essential component in the IT curriculum
in order to achieve the programme learning outcomes set by MQA standard. The training
provides exposure to IT processes at a practical level and helps developing professional
skills required. Many employers regard this training as a chance to assess the growth of
existing employee after almost completing a programme or to assess potential employees
for future employment. All IT students should make considerable effort and give sufficient
thought into obtaining the most effective training for themselves.
Students need to start Industrial Training before Tutorial 1 in current semester registered for
four months (16 weeks). If the student fails to complete the Industrial Training within the
prescribed period or exceeds two semesters, the student will be considered as failing and will
re‐registered again. At Open University Malaysia, Industrial Training is facilitated by
administrative assistant from Research and Project Management Unit (RPMU) and
coordinated by Industrial Training Advisor from Cluster of Applied Sciences.
1.2 Objective
The objective of this course is to expose the students to real situation of working environment
so that they can develop their skill as an IT Professional and apply what has been learnt
throughout the programme.
1.3 Learning Outcomes
By the end of this course, learners should be able to:
Apply systematic approach in solving issues or developing IT solutions
Demonstrate expertise in the application of information technology to support or manage
business problems in a team
Communicate effectively with various interest groups and written a good technical report
Independently seek, acquire and manage a variety of sources for continuous self‐
development and lifelong learning.
Behave in accordance with professional ethics, moral values and social responsibilities.

2. Industrial Placement
IT students who expect to undergo Industrial Training at the end of the year need to apply and
obtain an industrial placement on their own initiative. If required, an undertaking letter from
OUM can be obtained from the Administrative Assistant of RPMU to support the application
for a placement. Once a placement is obtained, students MUST submit a registration form to
RPMU. The form is need to be approved by Industrial Training Advisor before student can
attend for the training. Industrial Training Advisor is an academic staff appointed by Cluster of
Applied Sciences.

1.4 Student’s Responsibility
It is strictly required that the student is responsible for obtaining an industrial placement for a
minimal period of 16 working weeks (consecutively) and 640 working hours.
In a situation without any public holidays and leaves taken by the student during the training
period, the requirement above should normally be fulfilled according to the following
calculation:
Working hours: 8.30am to 5.30pm = 9hrs – 1hr lunch = 8hrs
Working days: Monday to Friday
Total hours: 16 weeks x 5 days x 8 hours = 640 hours
However, if there are any public holidays and leaves taken by the student during the training
period, they should not be counted as working hours.
4
Therefore, in this case, the student must compensate any shortage of working hours in order
to fulfil the minimal period of 16 working weeks (consecutively) and the 640 working hours as
required above.
3. Industrial Placement Approval
For an Industrial Training to be recognised and valid, the proposed placement must be
registered and approved by the Industrial Training Advisor BEFORE the training starts. The
approval is judged based on the relevance of industry, duration of training and training content
or programme.
Thus, students shall proceed the Industrial Training placement by submitting the TRAINING
REGISTRATION FORM as in APPENDIX C a week before Tutorial 1 begins on the academic
calendar of the University to the Administrative Assistant from RPMU via email. The RPMU will
process the form by getting the Advisor for the approval. RPMU will notified the student about
the status of the registration via email to the student. Do refer to Figure 1. for further details
of Registration procedure.
IMPORTANT NOTE:
Student has to inform the administrative assistant of RPMU immediately if their placement is
different from the registration form.
4. Industrial Training Visit
Visit by Advisor(s) will be conducted during the industrial training period. The students and the
organisation will be informed on the date and time of the visit by the Advisor. Normally the
visit will be conducted in the 15th or 16th week of the training. Presentation by the student and
discussion with the training supervisor will be held during the visit.
The purposes of the Advisor visit to the training place are as follows:
To assess student presentation during the visit, as part of the industrial training
assessment
To obtain feedback on training programme, student performance and training
progress through discussion with training supervisor(s).
To establish industrial relations between the University and the organisation.
IMPORTANT NOTE:

6. Industrial Training Report
An industrial training report should be prepared upon completion of training. The report is a
compiled writing that demonstrates student’s learning and development in technical
knowledge, practises and skills through the industrial experience. The training report should
also reflect a student’s ability in communicating IT context such as design, processes, evaluation
and decision making in a clear and concise manner through technical reports.
Students should seek advice from their employers to ensure that no confidential materials are
included in the report. The student should be able to present the report to the employers if
needed. Any references made in preparation of the report should be recognised using standard
APA 6th referencing formats. Students are advised to give a serious consideration in writing
their report. The report must be written in good quality which explain all industrial experience
and knowledge gained.
Student should refer to the REPORT WRITING GUIDELINE as given in APPENDIX A to prepare
their report. A copy of the Industrial Training Report and Training Log Book (bind together)
