DESCRIPTION
The second instructional course in a sequence that prepares individuals to apply technical knowledge
and skills to prepare and execute furniture design projects; assemble and finish furniture articles; repair
furniture; and stresses the safe use a variety of hand and power tools and machinery. Recommended
projects would be anything that would allow students to incorporate all joints and tools e.g. a chest of
drawers.
Prerequisite: Woodworking
o Twist
o Spade
o Countersink
o Driver bits: Phillips, Square, Flat
o Multi spur bit
Objective 2: Understand and demonstrate the safe use of portable power tools.
Describe the purpose and demonstrate the proper use of the following
portable power tools:
o Pneumatic/power nailer
o Power drills
o Router
o Finish sander
o Belt sander
o Orbital sander
o Biscuit jointer
o Hand jig saw
Objective 3: Understand and demonstrate the safe use of power machines.
Describe the purpose and demonstrate the proper use of the following
sawing machines:
o Table saw
o Power miter saw
o Band saw
Describe the purpose and demonstrate the proper use of the following
surfacing machines:
o Surface planer
o Jointer
Describe the purpose and demonstrate the proper use of the following
sanding machines:
o Disc sander
o Wide belt sander
o Spindle sander
Describe the purpose and demonstrate the proper use of the following
shaping machines:
o Router
o Shaper
o CNC machine
o Lathe
Describe the purpose and demonstrate the proper use of the following
drilling machines:
o Drill press
o Line boring machine
o Mortising machine
o Biscuit
o Blind dado
Construct the basic wood joints used in furniture construction.
Objective 2: Understand and demonstrate the use of furniture components and hardware.
Identify the components of a face frame and cabinet box.
o Stile
o Rail
o Mullion
o Side
o Veneer
o Base
o Shelf
o Web frame
o Kicker
o Drawer runner/glide
o Back
Identify the door options in furniture making:
o Flush
o Overlay
o Lip
o Tambour
Identify the components of a drawer.
Identify and properly install common furniture hardware such as:
o Hinges - offset, overlay, European, butt
o Drawer guides,
o Pulls and knobs,
o Shelf supports
Assemble a project with the proper adhesive and fasteners.
Construct a drawer.
Install lid or door and drawer.
Identify basic construction methods.
o Frame and panel
o Casework construction
o Post and rail
Objective 3: Understand and demonstrate sanding and finishing techniques.
Understand and properly apply the basic rules of sanding.
Select and correctly use each specified grit size
Properly prepare a surface for finishing
Properly apply stain, penetrating oil, and/or a clear finish
Properly apply a clear coat.
Objective 4: Understand order of operations
Identify the steps for squaring a board.
o Joint an edge
o Rip to width
o Cut one end square
o Cut to length
