NON-FICTION RESPONSE: SAME-SEX MARRIAGE ARTICLE

1. The main idea of the text is that the writer is talking about same sex marriage being legal
in the U.S. after many years of debate on whether it should be legal or it shouldn’t be.
2. The connections I can make between this and other texts i’ve read is that people always
fight for what they believe in no matter what.
3. The author’s purpose is to inform the readers that something that has been fought for for
many years is now finally legal in the U.S.
a. The specific words and phrases that led me to this conclusion is how they always mention
“right”.
4. The audience is the people who are against same sex marriage.
a. I know this because they mention that it is a constitutional right.
b. The choice of audience affects the text by it being directed to the haters and anyone
against same sex marriage.
5. The most relevant details the author uses to argue their position is that same sex marriage
is a fundamental right that no one can take away.
6. The most prevalent in the writing is logos and pathos.
a. Ex. 1: “Same-sex marriage is currently one of the most divisive political issues in our
nation” (Nussbaum).
Ex. 2: “he institution of marriage houses and supports several distinct aspects of human
life: sexual relations, friendship and companionship, love, conversation, procreation and
child-rearing, mutual responsibility. Marriages can exist without each of these” (Nussbaum).
Ex. 3: “Government plays a key role in all three aspects of marriage” (Nussbaum).
7. A possible theme can be that no one should interfere with one’s happiness if it doesn't
concern them.

8. This text helped me understand the importance of one’s rights.
9. I would not change anything about this text.
10. Same-sex marriage should be allowed without someone trying to interfere and ruin it.
They should be allowed with no problems because people seeking to marry the same sex don’t
do it to bother but for the exact opposite which is for themselves. In the article, Nussbaum states
that, “Government plays a key role in all three aspects of marriage” (Nussbaum). This shows that
the government always tries to get in between couples when it doesn’t concern them. They
should be able to marry with no conflict.
