Data Analysis Constructive/Destructive Forces Unit

“Watershed Wonders Erosion Unit”

Jodi Wilder

Pre Test Scores 40 %

Post Test Scores 60%

Students were given a pre-test before the constructive/destructive forces unit

and students entered their answers into I-respond. The pretest data showed that
of the 5 questions, students were successful with 40% of the questions. The goal
after teaching the unit was to increase the achievement rate to 80% on the post
test. The post test scores averaged 60% average.

Data Analysis:

Students took the pre-and post-tests with multiple choice answers on paper then
put their scores on I-Respond. After scoring both tests, percentages for correct
answers were calculated and shown on the table below.

Question Pre-Test % correct Post-Test % correct

#1 12% 71%
#2 35% 58%
#3 41% 41%
#4 71% 71%
#5 41% 58%

The pre-test showed that question one was missed by the majority of the students
and question four was correct by most of the students. After looking at the data,
we investigated what is used to hold water back with emphasis on making levees
during STEM day and we also emphasized using more vocabulary during the
investigations to include focus on sediment, weathering, erosion and deposition.
Making levees during significantly increased student achievement on question one
on the post test, increasing correct answers by 59%.
