FEAST OF CORPUS CHRISTI
Dear Parishioners
This is the feast of Corpus Christi – the
feast of the Body and Blood of Christ. St
Paul reminds us again and again that we
are the Body of Christ. We come together to
praise God; to listen to his Word and to be
fed and nourished by the very Body of
Christ.
In the scripture readings today, we
hear the word COVENANT mentioned in all
three readings. Moses offers sacrifices of
animals and created a covenant between
God and his people. The Letter to the
Hebrews speaks of a New Covenant in the
Blood of Christ.
In the Gospel, at the Last Supper, Jesus
takes the bread saying: ‘‘Take it, this is my
body …’’ taking the cup of wine he says:
‘This is my blood, the blood of the covenant
which is to be poured out for you …’’ ‘‘Do
this in memory of me’’. This is a command
kept faithfully by Christians throughout the
ages.
On the evening of the Last Supper,
Jesus faces the darkness of his time. ‘‘His
betrayer is close at hand’’. He gathers his
friends. He gave them and us, something to
keep his memory alive. He gave himself to
us for all time in bread and wine. We are to
come together to re-tell the stories; to
break the bread of life that would nourish
us in our journey to God’s Kingdom and
above all remember his love for all people.
So when we come together at Mass, it
is not just something to watch, it is
something we come to DO! We gather as
blessed people. In the action of the Mass
we hold holy the memory of Jesus; we the
Word and the Bread that is broken. Day by
day and week by week, we strengthen each
other by sharing our faith, our time which
is consecrated in the Lord. This is why
absent friends and family are missed by not
participating in the sacred mysteries of the
Eucharist.
Having received the great gift of the
Body and Blood of
Jesus, we must give
something in return.
This is why at the
end of Mass we give
the invitation to:
“Go in peace to love
and serve the Lord
in our brothers and
sisters”; we are invited “to go out and make
the world a better place”. We ask the Lord
to help us to do all this in memory of him.
St Paul in his writing constantly
equates the Body of Christ with both the
Eucharist and the assembled people of God.
St Augustine said …“At the Eucharist we
receive what we are and become what we
receive”
In other words as we gather for Mass we
are the Body of Christ – the Church. As we
come forward together as the Body of
Christ, we receive what we are already are
so that we can witness Christ’s presence.

The late Joseph McManus
who died on 1st June, 2018. He was the
husband of Teresa.
His funeral will take place here on
Wednesday 13th June at 10am
followed by burial. May he rest in peace. We
will remember his family and friends in
our prayers.

DECORATION VOLUNTEERS:
A few parishioners have volunteered to help
redecorate our Parish Halls which are in
need of some attention.
If you are able to give some hours to this
project, please put your name on the list at
the back of the church and lend us a helping
hand at a time that suits you.
