Abstract:

This work displays the utilization of Supervisory controlled and offline genetic tuning of inner loop
dynamics of SMES (Superconducting Magnetic Energy Storage System) Chopper system,
representing a first order system for improved load frequency control of a three area power system.
A compact rated SMES device has certain operational constraints .An adaptive model predictive
controller encapsulating on-line identification of the plant is utilized. A reference Power command is
generated for the SMES device, in response to a variable new-area control error (NACE),which is
given by a function of the area control error and the deviation in stored energy of the SMES coil. A
user made S – function code is developed addressing various design issues associated with the
model predictive controller (MPC).Simulation studies observed on Matlab Simulink with Steam
reheat constraint and governor deadband nonlinearity depicts a reduction of 50% and 68%in peak
overshoot in case of frequency and tie-power deviations respectively and the power system in no
case violates the power converter limits.
