1. Tribal diversity in Andhra Pradesh

A total of 33 tribes – as shown in sheets

10 disctintive features

Total 5 categories – according to geographical location

Each category – 60 sqm * 5 = 300 sqm

Total 300 sqm + 25% circulation = 300 + 75 = 375 sqm

2. Tribal households

Huts:

- Savaras – 16.5 sqm


- Koya – 24 sqm
- Yenadi – 19.62 sqm
- Konda reddy – 15 sqm
- Koya – 30 sqm
- Chenchu – 28.26 sqm
- Gadaba – 38.46 sqm
- Gond – 72 sqm

Total = 282.3 sqm + 30% circulation = 282.3 + 84.69 = 366.9 sqm


Garden area and sculptures of tribals – 100 sqm
Total = 466.9 sqm

3. Tribal Aesthetics and handicrafts gallery

Gond paintings

Defense wepons:

- Bow, arrow and casing


- Crude harpoon – barbed with sharp iron nails on one end
- Dao – made of steel –for cutting wood/bamboo

Chenchu tribe – musical instruments eg. Drum – out of bamboo and sheep skin

A total of 8 exhibits

2 of those require more space – gond and weapons.

Each exhibit – 25 sqm * 6 = 150 sqm

Large exhibit – 50 sqm * 2 = 100 sqm

Sculptures – small – 10 sqm * 5 = 50 sqm

Boat sculpture – 25 sqm

Total 325 sqm + 25% circulation = 325 + 81.25 = 406.25 sqm

4. Tribal festivals and ritual world

Common festivals celebrated:


- Boddemma – near coastal Andhra – worship of goddess Gauri – for unmarried girls in prayer
of early and successful marriage. An image of boddemma is made of ant hill earth and
decorated with flowers and turmeric etc

Tribal dances :
Dhimsa (Lambadi )
Bathakamma , dappu, mathuri, dhamal
During these festivals, liquor pours like water and Mohua (garlands) are given to everyone.

- Konda reddis – bhoomi pandya – full moonday – prayer to sun gods, manidi panduga,
gongura panduga, pachha panduga.
- Koya dora – worship of hill deity (konda devta) before raising of crops

- Gond festival :
Akipen – guardian diety of the villiage- at time of sowing – 2 wood poles on 1 big pole with a
white flag
Arulpen – pochamma – for newly married couples and during time of epidemics

- Chenchu tribe funeral ceremonies :


China dinal – children/unmarried death funeral ceremony
Padde dinal – married individual death funeral ceremony

Each area : 10 sqm *18 = 180 sqm

Tribal dances – sculptures – 50 sqm * 2 = 100 sqm

Individual tribal festivals : 4

Area : 25 sqm *4 = 100 sqm

Total = 380 sqm + 30% circulation = 380 +114 = 494 sqm

5. Personal adornments gallery

Brass anklets, ivory bangles, metal and wood.

Belts embellished with shells, metal mesh, beads and chains.

Silver, brass and copper – alloy with gold drained into fine wires

Bangles hair pins, necklaces, earrings and nose rings

Lac jewellery: synthetic stones, glass rings, mirror and glass beads

Banjara coin necklaces

Jewellery for horses, elephants, etc as a form of expression to the gods – chunky unrefined look,
expert artistic skills
Bidri jewellery – silver on black metal

Anklets – thin delicate silver article of jewellery, intricately twisted strands of silver – plaited
together then hammere

Lambadis – extremely colourful attire and ornaments

The women wear about 2 kg of silver, necklaces itself about half kilo and kambar pati – waistband –
about 1 kg, arm bands (dand kadias) – 250 gms each

Silver used in abundance – resemblance with Mughal tradition

Silver giver precedence over gold to maintain class equality.

= 295 + 25% circulation = 270 + 73.75 = 368.75 sqm
