Q1. There are 12 short answer type questions given bellow.
Attempt any 8 questions, each question carries 1 mark.
(i) Specify the basic steps involved in FEM analysis of any
structural problem.
(ii) Define the term shape function in context of FEM. Give the
expressions for both linear and cubic shape functions for 1-D.

and displacements.
(vi) What is the use of constitutive relations in elastic analysis?
Give the constitutive relationship for plane stress and plane strain
conditions.
(vii) State the Rayleigh-Ritz principle for 1-D bar problem.
(viii) What are different types of forces that contribute in external
work potential? Write down all these forces for 3-D case in vector
form.
(ix) Specify the different boundary conditions used in FEM.
(x) Write down the minimum potential energy principle.
(xi) How does meshing affect the accuracy of solution in FEM?
(xii) Define the term trial function with suitable examples.
