This study was a qualitative descriptive study with the aim was to determine the type and the

cause
of learners’ errors in solving non-routine algebra problem based on Newman procedure. The subject
of this study was 6 students of X class of MIA 2 Plus SMA Srijaya Negara. The data of this study was
collected by a testing technique using 3 non algebra questions and an interview to obtain the data
deeply. The result of this study showed that in solving non routine algebra questions, the students
got 4 types of error. Reading error was happened because the students didn’t know that the
operation which was not written between two or more variables was a multiplication operation.
Comprehention error was happened because the students were not able enough in interpretting the
meaning of the sentences. Transformation error was happened because the students didn’t
understand the definition of the variables, the students translated the information directly without
analyzing the reasoning of the mathematic form gotten, and the students simply memorized the
modelling procedures which explained by the teacher without understanding it. Processing skills
error was happened because the students were to quick to make the decision so they were not
accurate in calculating, inconsistent in making the strategy plan in transformation phase, unable to
perform the arithmatic operation correctly, not understanding the procedures but simply
memorized it, wrong way in concluding the concept, and be panic when the completion time was a
bit left.
