Script
In order to complete this correctly, you need to add stage directions for your actors

(Piano Playing in background through intro and Adams audio part)

*B-roll of guitars, carousel, a bridge and busker Show title*

Adam: (Audio)Music can transform people’s lives if a person from a difficult

background it can give you confidence it can

*cut to Adam visuals*

stimulate the brain in ways that other subjects really don’t.

*Cut to Auriane*

Auriane: Music is a big part of everyone’s lives, whether is from listening to it through
their headphones

*B-roll of someone with headphones in *

*B-roll of someone playing piano *

or producing it. However, recently,

*Cut to Auriane*

there have been major cut backs in the funds that go into music education in
schools throughout the country.

*Cut to B-roll on guitars*

This means students have

*Cut to Auriane*

to halt their music education

*B-roll of guitars*

giving them less chance to progress.

*Cut the Karen*

Karen: I think there will be less students that get an opportunity to take part in music
right from where their very young

*B-roll of guitars*

at the moment there have been lessons

P.4
*Cut to Karen*

in junior school where they have to do an instrument they have to do it for a year

*B-roll of guitars*

and I think

*Cut to Karen*

those lessons start to get cut their will be less experiences come to into secondary
school and therefore it will only be those people who have got the more money that
will be able to

*B-roll of guitars*

afford lessons and

*Cut to Karen*

therefore, as they go through their GCSE’S it will be there will be limited numbers
because people won’t have had the experience lower down the school.

*Cut to Auriane*

Auriane: "Music as a subject could be facing extinction," says Ally Daubney from the
University of Sussex. In 2012 to 2013 most schools were offering music BTEC level 2
from 166 schools to then falling to only 50 in 2016-17. Alongside that GCSE music has
fallen by

*b-roll of guitars*

6 % from 85%

*Cut to Auriane*

in 2012 to 2014 to then 79% in 2016-17, a result to this means that

*b-roll of guitars*

less students are

*Cut to Auriane*

having the chance to follow through their music studies and being forced to take
subjects that they might not be as confident with, bring their mark down. This could
have a major impact on what certain pupils want to do with their future.

*Cut to Adam*

Adam: It really puts the pressure on parents

*b-roll of music shop*

P.5

even thought a lot of music shops nowadays

*Cut to Adam*

you can rent instruments you don’t have to

* b-roll of music room*

buy the instrument

*Cut to Adam*

outright and you have the opportunity then

B-roll in music shops

after

*Cut to Adam*

P.4
few months if your child isn’t sticking at it to return the instrument but if you do that
for extended periods it can work out to be more expensive then actually just buying
it in the first place, and of course there’s the cost of lessons themselves so that’s
where the greatest impact would come for parents without a social income

*Cut to Auriane*

Auriane: A report made last year by the Education Policy Institute said the proportion
of 15 and 16-year-olds in England studying arts subjects, including music has fallen to
the lowest level in a decade due to the government policies and education cuts.
The EPI estimated that 19 thousand fewer pupils took arts subjects at key stage four
last year compared with in 2014.

*Cut to Karen *

Karen: All schools and colleges will be affected because

I think

*b-roll in music shop*

their priorities

*Cut to Karen*

aren’t going to be towards music although I think it does make a difference with
who the head teacher is and how important they

*B-roll of music shop*

value music in terms of

*Cut to Karen*

P.6
their curriculum I would say were quite lucky here that it is valued so their fore
students are encouraged to take part and that sort of thing and I think that if you’re
in a private school I think either private schools will fund music education themselves
or they’ll just add it to the parent’s bills at the end of it so therefore they’ll carry it on
in the same sort of way but I don’t think that will help where the schools sort of
budget will have more of an impact

*Cut to Auriane *

Auriane: This issue has affected me personally as due to the Henley college cutting
music from their education system I was not able to choose what I wanted to forcing

*B-roll of Auriane playing piano*

me to take a different subject which I am not as confident in and stopping the

progress I could be doing

*Cut to Auriane*

if I was able to partake in music studies

*Cut to Adam *

Adam: Because of the decline in partake of students wanting to take music at A-

level unfortunately there’s been a proposal the course will no longer run so as from
September I will not have a job, yes unfortunately. I know it has affected

*b-roll in music room*

people like yourselves where because we didn’t have quite the numbers to make
the course sustainable

*Cut to Adam*

financially despite people like you wanting to do the course they decided not to run
it and that’s a big disappointment individually but also culturally and I’m sure you
would have benefitted in following an interest that you had so I think it’s a great
shame.

*Cut to Karen *

Karen: I think that’s going to be a really tough one I think it will end up going directly
down the performance route and I don’t think there will be formal qualifications as
much in them so GCSE and a levels b-tects degrees in music I think it will end up
being much more performance route and you going to be really lucky if your
spotted and you In the right place at the right time I think there’s a really tricky one
for people to try and manage because the others ideas that if there aren’t as many
people that want to do it there aren’t as many coursed offered and therefore
P.7

there’s a bit of a vicious circle that you’ll end up the courses not being offered
cause there’s not as many people wasn’t to do them and therefore you’re not
going to be able to get to study them or places are going to be really competitive
and they can only take I don’t know like 30 people whereas they were taking
double that I think it’s going to be much more competitive and there’s not as many
options

*Cut to Auriane *

Auriane: The cuts to music education is going to affect not only teachers but
students too who want to follow their career in the music industry. This means
students will be forced to choose other subjects that they might not be as good as
therefore not getting the grades they need to be able to get into either college or
university.

Music is a big thing in people’s lives so for music to be taken away in education it’s
going to cause a crisis on how many new artists there will be in the future and
maybe lead to less music around the country.
