Rate of Reaction Lab

Question: Which has a bigger impact on the rate or reaction, temperature or particle size?

Hypothesis: If temperature and particle size are tested on the rate of reaction, then particle size

will have a bigger impact because when the particles are broken down there will be less energy

needed to dissolve an Alka Seltzer tablet.

Variables: The independent variables are the temperature and the particle size. The dependent

variable is the amount of time the reaction took.

Materials:

1. Hot water

2. Room temperature water

3. 4 Alka Seltzer tablets

4. Thermometers

5. 2 beakers

6. Grinder

Procedure:

1. Fill two beakers with 100 ml of water, one with hot water and one with room temperature

water and record their starting temperatures.

2. Drop one whole Alka Seltzer tablets in each beaker and record how long they take to

dissolve.

3. Fill two more beakers with 100 ml of water, one with hot water and one with room

temperature water and record their starting temperatures.

4. Drop one crushed Alka Seltzer tablet in each beaker and record how long they take to

dissolve.

Raw Data:

Alka Seltzer Tablet Water Temperature ( ° C) Reaction Time (seconds)

Whole 75 25

Whole 25 43

Crushed 72 14

Crushed 24 40

Processed Data:
Conclusion:

The data collected shows that temperature has a bigger impact than particle size on the rate of

reaction. The original hypothesis, (If temperature and particle size are tested on the rate of

reaction, then particle size will have a bigger impact because when the particles are broken down

there will be less energy needed to dissolve an Alka Seltzer tablet), is proven wrong.

Evaluation:

During this experiment, the only experimental error that occurred was that we did not start

timing one of the reactions as soon as the Alka Seltzer tablets were dropped. This made our

reaction times a little less accurate. If this reaction were to be performed again, we would make

sure that we start timing at the same time the reaction were to start.
