1 INTRODUCTION
This document describes the installation of the WindObserver II
Ultrasonic Wind Sensor that forms part of the Gill Instruments
Wind Measuring System.
The Gill Instruments Wind Measuring System is fast responding
and accurate system designed for measuring wind speed and
direction on board vessels where a high demand for the
reliability of equipment is required.
The Wind Measuring System consists of two components, an
outdoor Ultrasonic Wind Sensor and Junction Box from Gill
Instruments for measuring wind speed and direction and an
indoor Wind Display from Observator Instruments for indication
of wind speed and direction.
This Wind Display is provided with a data output for serial
transmission of the values measured by the Wind Sensor to the
DP system.
Note Unless stated otherwise, the Wind Display is an option that is
not part of a standard delivery, and therefore must be ordered
separately.
This document contains the specifications, procedures and
drawings necessary for the installation of the Wind Sensor and
its Junction Box.
Note The guidelines for installation presented here must be regarded
as a base for detailed plans prepared by the installation
shipyard. These plans must include drawings, instructions and
procedures specific to the vessel in which the equipment is to be
installed. These drawings must be approved by the local
maritime classification society.

Unless stated otherwise, all installation work described in this

document is to be performed by yard/customer personnel. It is
the yard/customer responsibility to ensure that their installation
personnel are sufficiently qualified and that proper precautions
are taken to avoid injuries and/or damage to life, health,
environment, equipment and property.
Kongsberg Maritime AS accepts no responsibility for any
damage or injury to the system, vessel or personnel caused by
drawings, instructions or procedures not prepared by Kongsberg
Maritime AS.

3 INSTALLATION
This chapter presents the procedures and drawings for
installation of the Wind Sensor and its Junction Box.

3.1 Location of the units

3.1.1 Wind Sensor
The Wind Sensor must be placed as far as possible away from
any object that may influence the wind measurement accuracy.
The best result will be obtained by attaching the Wind Sensor to
a pipe mounted at the top of the vessel’s mast.
Installation of the Wind Sensor immediately above the vessel’s
deck is unfavourable, especially if the deck has sides that the
wind will be forced to travel over. In this situation turbulence of
the wind speed and direction may occur which has no coherence
with the undisturbed wind speed and direction.

3.1.2 Junction Box

The Junction Box must be mounted within 2 metres from the
Wind Sensor (see Figure 4).

3.2 Logistics
Safety: General safety precautions should
be followed when working with the
Wind Sensor.
Personnel qualifications: Trained mechanical worker.
Min. no. of personnel: One
Ship location: No recommendations.
Special tools required: None

3.3 Handling
Handle the Wind Sensor with care, it is a delicate instrument.

3.4 Mechanical installation

3.4.1 Wind Sensor
For mechanical installation of the Wind Sensor, proceed as
follows:
Note The Wind Sensor must be mounted vertically.
1 To meet stiffness requirements, ensure that the yard or
customer supplied mounting bracket for the Wind Sensor
has a minimum thickness of 3/16" (see Figure 1).
2 Attach the mounting bracket, facing the correct direction
(see Note below), on a pipe (or similar item) as shown in
Figure 1.
Note Ensure that the “North indicating dividing line” on the label of
the Wind Sensor (see Figure 2) is aligned, within ±2º, parallel to
the alongships centre line of the vessel, facing the bow.
3 Attach the Wind Sensor to the mounting bracket as shown
in Figure 3.
4 Use cable ties or equivalent to fasten the cable (running
from the Wind Sensor to the Junction Box) to the pipe (or
similar item) and/or the vessel’s mast.

3.4.2 Junction Box

For mechanical installation of the Junction Box, proceed as
follows:
1 Decide where to locate the Junction Box.
Note that it must be mounted within 2.0 metres from the
Wind Sensor (see Figure 4).
2 Drill four holes at the mounting location according to
Figure 5.
3 Use four bolts, washers and nuts to fasten the Junction
Box to a mounting plate attached to the pipe (or similar
item) at the top of the vessel’s mast, or direct to the
vessel’s mast.

3.5 Electrical installation

For electrical connections, see Table 1.

3.5.1 Wind Sensor and Junction Box

The Wind Sensor comes with a flying, 9-pair cable that is
terminated inside the Junction Box.
The glands of the Junction Box have the same or greater ingress
protection than that of the Wind Sensor. All the cores of the
cable are individually terminated and none of the cores are
joined together. Joining cores together can cause permanent
damage to the Wind Sensor. The screens of each pair are joined
together inside the Wind Sensor, and these should be joined
together and connected to the chassis of the Junction Box as
close as possible to the cable termination.
If the cable is likely to be exposed to mechanical damage, then it
must be protected by routing it in a suitable conduit or cable
tray.
The electrical installation of the Wind Sensor is performed as
follows:
1 At delivery:
a Check that all the used cores of the cable from the
Wind Sensor are terminated in the Junction Box (see
Table 1).
b Check that all the spare cores of the cable from the
Wind Sensor are individually insulated and sealed with
a heat shrink sleeve and that all of the individual
insulating heat shrink sleeves are collected together and
sealed inside one large heat shrink sleeve.
Note Inside the cover of the Junction Box there is a label showing the
terminations listed in Table 1.
2 Avoid long earth loops.
Do not connect the “Supply –VE” or “Analogue 0 Volt” to
the cable screens or chassis ground as this can cause
permanent damage to the Wind Sensor.
3 Spare cores are to be individually terminated with a heat
shrink sleeve and all individual heat shrink sleeves are to
be collected together inside one large heat shrink sleeve.
4 Connect the earth strap as shown in Figure 1.
