CE 226 STRUCTURAL DYNAMICS

QUIZ 3
Due: May 9, 2018

The floor weights and total floor stiffnesses of the three-story shear frame are shown in the
figure below.

w = [80 + (70)*RND] round to nearest kip

k = [250 + (50)*RND] round to nearest kip/in

where RND = last 3 digits of your Student

Number in reverse order divided by 1000.
Ex. If SN = 2016-12345, RND = 0.543

Floor height = 9 +3*RND round to nearest 0.5 ft

Bay width = 10 + 5*RND round to nearest 0.5 ft

1. Determine the 3 natural vibration frequencies and mode shapes of the frame by direct
mathematical solution.
2. Determine the fundamental natural vibration frequency 1 and mode 1 by inverse vector
iteration.
3. Determine the fundamental natural vibration frequency 1 and mode 1 by inverse vector
iteration with shifting.
4. Determine the 3 natural vibration frequencies and modes of the frame using Rayleigh’s
quotient iteration.
5. Determine the fundamental natural vibration frequency 1 and mode 1 and the highest
mode frequency,  , and mode shape, 3, using the appropriate form of the Stodola Method.
6. Determine the second natural vibration frequency 2 and mode 2 using Holzer’s Method.
7. Determine the free vibration response of the structure if the floors are displaced as shown
below, and released. Plot the displacement response off each floor.

For Problems 8 to 13.

Each floor is acted upon by horizontal forces of 10, 20 and 30 kips (abrupt, constant forces)
acting on the 1st, 2nd and 3rd floor, respectively. (Note|: Since this is a dynamic problem, all
responses are functions of time).

8. Determine the total displacement response of the system. Plot the displacement vs time for
each floor.
9. Determine the equivalent static forces.
10. Determine the spring forces (or story shears) of the floors.
11. Determine the modal expansion of the given loading that define the spatial distribution of
forces. Show these expansions graphically and comment on the relative contributions of the
various modes.
12. Determine (show in tabular format) the modal and cumulative distribution factors for the roof
displacement.
13. Determine (show in tabular format) the modal and cumulative distribution factors for the base
shear.

14. Derive the equations for (a) floor displacements and (b) storey shears due to a horizontal
ground acceleration of 𝑢̈ g(t). (Since the exact acceleration function is not specified, express
the answers in terms of D and A.)
15. Determine the effective modal masses and effective modal heights for the same structure.

16. Using Response Spectrum Analysis Method, determine the peak values of displacements
and equivalent static forces due to the El Centro earthquake (using the Response Spectrum in
Figure 13.8.2 of Chopra). Show your answer in the form of Figures 13.8.3.
17. Using SRSS determine the base shear.

18. Derive a Rayleigh damping matrix for the structure such that the damping ratio is 5% for the
first and third mode. Compute the damping ratio for the second mode.
