1 Pre-Class Problems
This section contains problems that you are expected to work through before your tutorial class.
1. For u = (1, 1) and v = (−5, 0) , calculate u + 3 v, u · v , ku − vk and find the angle between u and v .
2. Find a unit vector perpendicular to the plane determined by the points A(0, −2, 1) , B(1, −1, −2) and
C(−1, 1, 0) in R3 .
2 Class Problems
This section contains problems that your tutor will work through with you during your tutorial class.
1. For u = (1, 2) and v = (2, 1) , calculate u + 3 v, u · v , ku − vk and find the angle between u and v .
2. Consider the points (1, 2, 3) , (0, 2, 4) and (2, 1, 3) in R3 .
(a) Find a unit vector perpendicular to the plane containing these points.
(b) Find the equation of this plane.
(c) Find the area of a parallelogram with these points as three of its vertices.
3. Suppose that O(0, 0) , U (2, 1) , V (−1, 2) and W (5, 5) are points in R2 .
−−→
(a) Find the vector U V .
(b) Find a, b, c ∈ R so that the line `1 through U and V is given by the equation a x + b y + c = 0 .
−−→ −−→
(c) Find the orthogonal projection of OW in the direction of U V .
(d) Find the distance of W to the line `1 .
3 Additional problems
These are problems that students who would like something a little more challenging can try at home after the
tutorial. Your tutor may discuss some of these problems in the tutorial if time permits. Questions with a (*)
are particularly challenging.
1. Suppose that O(0, 0) , U (2, 1) , V (−1, 2) and W (5, 5) are points in R2 . These questions continue from
3(a)-(d) of the class problems:
(a) Find the equation of the line `2 which passes through W and is perpendicular to `1 .
−−→
Note that U V is normal to `2 .
−−→
(b) Find the point Q where `1 and `2 intersect. Calculate kQW k .
2. Find α , β and γ so that the circle which passes through A = (0, 1) , B = (1, 0) and C = (4, 4) has equation
x2 + y 2 + α x + β y + γ = 0 .
3. Find the equation of the line ` in the plane which passes through (3, 2) and (−1, 3). In addition find a and
d in R2 so that ` = {a + td : t ∈ R}. Find a non-zero vector n which is normal `, meaning that n · d = 0.
Find the distance of (−4, 4) to the line `.
5. (*) Consider the points (1, 2, 3) , (0, 2, 4) and (2, 1, 3) in R3 . Find the perpendicular distance between the
point (1, 2, 3) and the line passing through the points (0, 2, 4) and (2, 1, 3) .
4 Homework problems
These are the questions that you need to do and hand to your tutor at the end of the following week’s tutorial.
Use the barcoded first page of the following week’s tutorial exercises as your coversheet when you hand them in.
