and his position is up for grabs.

footage, land values, etc. are all
online for the “assessor’s office to
utilize.
I’m not retiring because I
don’t love my job, I do,” said
Sonnemann. “But after thirty
years, I’m looking forward to new
adventures.”
Sonnemann has been a volun-
teer with search and rescue and
the fire department for 25 years,
and he’s looking forward to con-
tinuing his volunteering in mul-
tiple positions around Douglas
County during his well-earned
retirement.

One word for state and federal candidates: Stampede!

A literal cattle call of can-
didates is participating in the
election for U.S. Senate this
year.
In the race for Dean Hell-
er’s U.S. Senate seat, there are
15 candidates. Heller has four
challengers in the Republican
primary: Sherry Brooks, Sarah
Gazala, Vic Harrell and Tom
Heck. Heller’s path to the nom-
ination became much smoother
after Danny Tarkanian pulled
out of that race, opting in-
stead to run for the House of
Representatives.
There are six Democrats run-
ning, led by Rep. Jacky Rosen.
The others are Danny Burleigh,
David Knight, Bobby Mahen-
dra, Allen Rheinhart, and Jesse
Sbaih.
There are also minor party
candidates but they don’t face a
primary vote.
Mark Amodei has three Re-
publican primary challengers
including perennial candidate
Sharron Angle. Joel Beck and
Ian Luetehans are the others.
Six Democrats are vying for
the opportunity to try unseat
Amodei including Rick Shep-
herd and Vance Alm who have
both run for office before. Jack
Schofield Jr., Clint Koble, Jesse
Hurley and Patrick Fogarty are
also running.
The most crowded race is for
governor where 17 people have
filed. Six of them are Demo-
crats including front runners
Chris Giunchigliani and Steve
Sisolak. John Bonaventura,
Asheesh Dewan, David Jones,
and Henry Thorns are the
others.
The Republican primary
candidates are led by Attorney
General Adam Laxalt and Trea-
surer Dan Schwartz. The other
GOP candidates are Bill Boyd,
Stephanie Carlisle, Frederick
Conquest, Edward Dundas, Jar-
ed Fisher, and Stan Lusak.
There are nine candidates
seeking to succeed Mark
Hutchison, who elected not to
run again for lieutenant gov-
ernor. The Republican pack is
led by Senate Minority Leader
Michael Roberson and includes
Eugene Hoover, Brent Jones,
Scott LaFata and Gary Meyers.
Former Treasurer Kate Mar-
shall faces Laurie Hansen in the
Democrat primary.
Secretary of State Barbara Ce-
gavske faces Ernest Aldridge in
the primary. Democrat Assem-
blyman Nelson Araujo has no
primary opponent.
The race to replace Schwartz
as state Treasurer has four
candidates. While the IAP and

ignored infrastructure needs until
lately is shameful. But far more is
needed, and I will advocate for that.
I will also advocate for the dissolu-
tion of Redevelopment Area #2. It
diverts $200 million into the Casino
corridor, so that revenue is not avail-
able to the general fund, schools, the
police, and other important entities.
The Lake deserves more consider-
ation, but even California abandoned
Redevelopment as too corrupt.
I oppose what is now being called
“Attainable Housing.” It cannot exist
without some form of subsidy, and it
goes against keeping the county rural.
I’m determined to keep development
cohesive and in line with the Master
Plan, not grant new zoning or vari-
ances at the drop of a request by a
“powerful” player in the county. I was
CFO of a company with over 30,000
employees for several decades, so I
know how to handle financial chal-
lenges and employee contracts in
the way that is most beneficial to the
taxpayers as well as fair to those who
have chosen to serve this county.
Like Ronald Reagan, I find gov-
ernment too often is the problem,

New poll books will allow voters to cast a ballot at any open polling

While a squiggle might cut it for
a signature on the digital pad at
the grocery store, it won’t suffice
when it comes time to vote in the
upcoming primary.
That’s because poll workers will
be able to compare your signature
with the one on the voting rolls,
and if you didn’t use a squiggle
there, it won’t match come Elec-
tion Day.
Not quite two-dozen people
turned out for an open house to
view the new voting machines on
Wednesday, April 11, Clerk-Trea-
surer Kathy Lewis said.
However, a steady stream of
election workers went through
training on Wednesday and
Thursday, she said.
“The response has been very
positive,” Lewis said.
The big computer pads voters
will use to cast their ballots for
the first time this primary are
fairly similar to the old voting
machines.
The interface is slightly differ-
ent, but voters will still receive a
card to put in the machine, and
will still see a print out of their
vote.
Using the old system, poll work-
ers would look voters’ names up in
a book and the person would sign
the book before they got the card.

The advantage to the new sys-
tem is that every election worker
at every polling station will have
access to the database, so for
example Gardnerville Ranchos
residents who commute to Carson
or Reno will be able to cast their
ballots in Gardnerville or even
Indian Hills on their way to or
from work.
In order to bring that change
about, some traditional polling
places, such as Fish Springs, Sher-
idan Acres and Ruhenstroth have
been eliminated.
While early voting will take
place in Minden, it may be the
first time since the town’s found-
ing that there won’t be a polling
place in the county seat on Elec-
tion Day.
“We had around 300 voters for
the 2016 Primary at CVIC hall,”
Lewis said.
Those voters will, however, be
able to go to any of the other poll-
ing places on June 12.

people. People expect that their
courts will resolve their prob-
lems. People expect that their
courts will provide them a fair
opportunity to be heard. People
expect decisions based upon
Nevada law and common sense.
Finally, people expect to receive
decisions in a timely manner.
Whether right or wrong, too
many Nevadans believe that
they are not receiving the ser-
vice that they have a right to
expect from their family courts
in Clark and Washoe coun-
ties. Nevada’s families should
come first. The family courts in
Washoe and Clark counties need
more judges and resources to
help our families. The Supreme
Court needs to act with a sense
of urgency. Less time should be
spent on commissions and ad-
ministrative dockets. Courts ex-
ist to resolve people’s problems
and not to indulge a judge’s
desire to legislate. If elected, I
will urge other members of the
Supreme Court to focus upon
our families and to focus upon
resolving the backlog of cases.
Qualifications: I have served
as a rural district court judge
for over 10 years in the Third
Judicial District. Prior to serv-
ing on the bench, I was the
elected Lyon County District
Attorney. I also served as a dep-
uty district attorney for Lyon
and Lander counties. I under-
stand the issues that impact our
rural communities and govern-
ments. I appreciate the impor-
tance of agriculture, mining,
and the use of our public lands.
There are 17 counties in
Nevada. The 15 rural counties
have little to no representation
in our State government. With
each census we lose more of
our local representation due to
re-apportionment.
The Nevada Supreme Court
has seven seats. It has been
decades since a rural county
judge was elected to the Nevada
Supreme Court. Adding another
judge from Washoe or Clark
counties will add no diversi-
ty to our Supreme Court. The
Supreme Court also lacks any
justices with extensive family
law experience.
Why elect a rural county dis-
trict court judge? Rural county
district court judges handle
every aspect of the law. Rural
counties do not have family
courts or business courts in
which the judges only handle
those matters. It is not uncom-
mon for a rural county judge to
handle a child custody case in
the morning and an evidentiary
hearing in a murder case in the
afternoon. The next day might
involve a water rights case or
quiet title action.
As a grandson of Basque
immigrants, I understand the
importance of family and com-
munity. I have served Nevadans
in three rural counties over
the past 24 years. I raised my
children in Lovelock, Battle
Mountain, and Fernley. I have
also worked in Yerington and
Fallon. I have been married to
my wife Suzanne for 28 years.
My children are now pursuing
graduate degrees.
You have a choice in this

Platform: There are two main
points to my platform: 1) Fair
and consistent application of
the law; and 2) Decreasing
the time to decision and more
published decisions. First, as a
Justice, my rulings will always

way I have approached the
cases before me as a District
Judge, always ruling based on
the merits of the case, not the
race, religion, socioeconomic
status, or political clout of the
attorneys or the parties before
me. I am absolutely committed
to the rule of law, and thus the
law must be applied fairly and
consistently to all parties and
nobody is above the law.
Second, now that the Court
of Appeals has been in place for
a couple of years, the Nevada
Supreme Court must resolve
the cases before it more quickly,
and recognize the impact on
people’s lives when cases re-
main pending for years without
a resolution. I also look forward
to issuing more published de-
cisions which have the effect of
binding precedent and thus will
lend consistency and predict-
ability to litigation at the trial
level once we know what the
law is in a particular area.
Qualifications: I am the most
qualified based on my educa-
tion, work experience, demean-
or, and community involve-
ment. I graduated magna cum
laude from the University of
Pennsylvania with honors in
Political Science, and then went
to law school at the University
of Virginia where I was on the
Virginia Law Review and was
awarded the Order of the Coif
based on graduating in the top
10 percent of the class. After
law school, I clerked for United
States District Judge Philip Pro
in Las Vegas for two years, and
then practiced in the areas of
commercial litigation and em-
ployment law for 16 years.
In 2007, I was appointed as
a District Judge in the Eighth
Judicial District Court where
I have been hearing civil and
criminal cases for over 10 years
now. As a District Judge, I treat
everybody with courtesy and
respect, work hard to prepare
for every hearing, and rule
based on the facts and the law,
explaining the reasons for my
decisions. I get along well with
the attorneys and parties who
appear before me as well as my
colleagues on the bench, and
have relationships of mutual
respect with the current Ne-
vada Supreme Court Justices
who have been reviewing my
decisions for the last 10 years.
During that time, I have been
the highest rated female judge
in my court in the Review-Jour-
nal’s Judging the Judges survey.
Throughout my career, I have
been very involved in the legal
community and the community
at large, and have been recog-
nized for my contributions. I
was President of the Southern
Nevada Association of Women
Attorneys from 2004 to 2006,
and President of the Howard
D. McKibben Chapter of the
American Inn of Court from
2010 to 2012. I was recog-
nized by the Clark County
Law Foundation as the Trial
by Peers Judge of the Year for
2009 and was the Clark County
Bar Association’s Ambassador
of the Year for 2010. In May of
2016, I was a recipient of the
Clark County Law Foundation’s
Liberty Bell Award. I have par-
ticipated as a judge in the We
the People competition among
high school students regarding

Dear Douglas County Voters,

I am a Republican candidate for County Commissioner
in District 2, the seat currently held by Steve Thaler. The
countywide vote in this primary election will decide who wins
the race. As a regular attendee at the Board of Commissioners
meetings, and as a dyed-in-the-wool conservative who wants
local government policies that line up with what the majority of
the people who live here want, I have become troubled by much
of the decision-making I have observed.
The County needs to re-assess its direction. Instead of flood control, the current Board and my opponent in
particular spend far too much of their time and congestion and further destroy the very rural atmosphere
most of us sought out when we chose this county as where we wanted to be. Thaler’s recent votes approving
development in a conservation easement and apartments out in Sunridge are just two examples.
