Community Dental Health

Spring, 2018
 Brookdale Assisted Living
 Pullman Family Dental Day
 Life Choices Pregnancy Center
 Project Leader: Nichole Gallagher
 Location: Brookdale Assistant Living
 Group to Teach: Nursing home care providers (CNA’s) ages
18 and older. At a nursing home.
 General Goal(s):
◦ Educate the staff on xerostomia and managing xerostomia,
◦ common medications and side effects,
◦ decay process, gingivitis, periodontal disease,
◦ how to take care of dentures, denture sores,
◦ how to care for the teeth, different health conditions, and oral care,
◦ hygiene aides,
◦ nutrition associated with tooth loss, dentures, and decreased saliva and
how that can relate to an alteration in diet.
Required Materials:
 Computer to show presentation and video,
 Dentures
 Sterilized extracted teeth to what decay
looks like
 Xerostomia products
 Pre and Post Test
 Different home care aids to use for elderly
 Typodont
Specific Objectives:
 Created a power point presentation that attains information
that are highlighted in the general goals.
 Brought dentures to educate how to properly clean and take
care of dentures.
 Brought a set of dentures that have calculus on them to show
the staff what it looks like.
 Brought a few xerostomia saliva substitute examples such as
biotene and xylimelts to show the staff how these products
work.
 Brought different types of home care aids and demonstrate
use.
 Displayed this video resource to help aid my presentation
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AVsMmppYXrI.
 Introduction:
“Aging is not a dominant or single factor in
determining the oral health status in the geriatrics.
Certain medical conditions, such as arthritis in the
hands and fingers can make brushing and flossing
difficult or impossible to accomplish. Different
medications also affect the oral health care leading
to adverse intraoral effects. Daily brushing, flossing,
and removing partial or complete dentures at night
is essential to keeping the elderly in good oral
health.”
Step-by-Step Procedures of Presentation:
 1) Hand out pre test for CNA’s to fill out. (3 minutes)

 2) Have power point presentation displayed and begin

educating the CNA’s. Use video resource to help aid in
presentation. (15 minutes)
 3) When I talk about home care show CNA’s dentures and how
to properly clean. (5 minutes)
 4) When I talk about decay, gingivitis, and periodontal disease
show extracted decayed teeth. (3 minutes)
 5) Show and have the CNA’s try the saliva substitutes for
xerostomia. (5 minutes)
 6) Answer questions and have CNA’s take post test. (5 minutes)
 Conclusion:
“With this information, you can help the elders to
live a more comfortable life and help prevent the
development of further gum disease, decay, and
tooth loss. The affects of certain medications on oral
health is crucial. I hope that in the future the signs
and symptoms will be more noticeable now. The
importance of taking care of the elderly’s oral
hygiene can help prevent future problems and pain.
It’s the best quality of life to help the elderly to
maintain their teeth and prevent future loss of teeth.
Does anyone have any questions?”
Tooth loss, dentures, and decreased saliva can
lead to alteration in diet. Elders may experience
the following:
• Changed sensory perception of eating
(texture and taste)
• Lowered chewing efficiency
• Decreased intake of important nutrients
• Less fresh fruit, vegetables, and fiber in
the diet
• Less Vitamin C

 Audience Response:
 They thanked us and said we had good visual
aids, they were familiar with some things but
felt more confident after the presentation,
they learned some new flossing aids, new
xerostomia products, and learned some new
ideas to clean the vestibules with a damp
rag, found out alternatives for patients that
like to suck on candies such as xylitol ice
chip candies.
 We were well prepared. They knew a lot more
information then we were anticipating.
 We would try to get a bigger audience if we
were to present again. If possible we would
like to include patients themselves and family
members in the presentation.

 Veronica Hopwood, Wellness Coordinator for Pullman
Regional Hospital
 Your students had a great professional demeanor—it gave community members
confidence in their work and knowledge. They had a great appearance, communication
and attitude when it came to interacting with community members.
 The presentation of the resources used for the event was great—I appreciated that they
set a table with all the resources they were recommending for maintaining a good oral
health.
 Integration of power point presentation and the other little white board with info about
healthy foods for your teeth and body, bad food for teeth and body and good food for
body but bad for teeth was great for parents to have a visual and an idea of the amount
of sugar in some drinks and how that correlates with oral health problems.
 The interactive presentation for the little ones was a fantastic idea to help children learn
about oral health and support parents’ efforts—the resources that were brought were
very engaging.
 I can’t thank you and your students enough for the willingness to do multiple
presentations.
 Your preparedness for handling the screening and the way in which students managed
the info gathered from the screening –I felt your students tried to provide as much
privacy and confidentiality as possible. I did not hear anyone talking about any
community member’s oral health screening –that was great.
 We were well prepared and had good
audience participation and response. The
coordinators were very pleased.
 For the screenings it would have been
smoother if we had a schedule of when
people were to arrive instead of trickling in
throughout the morning.
 If we were to do the presentation again we
would make a schedule of activities and when
to arrive.
