MA-504: ADVANCED MATHEMATICS

Tensor Analysis: Contra variant and covariant vector, Tensors of various types, Algebra of Tensors
and contraction, Metric Tensor and 3-index Christoffel symbols. Covariant derivative and intrinsic
derivative. Curl Divergence and Laplacian Operators in Tensor form. Cartesian tensor and their
applications.
Calculus of Variation: Functionals and their Gataux derivative, Euler's equation and its
generalization. One and several independent variables. Initial value problems. Applications to
dynamical problems. Weierstrass's sufficiency condition for weak and strong minima and maxima.
Matrix Methods in Engineering: Introduction, Simultaneous linear equations, Eigen values and
Eigen vectors, Linear differential equations.
Numerical Solution of Partial Differential Equations: Classification of partial differential
