Lecture 1:

An Introduction to Health &

Safety in Construction Industry

Conceptual Framework
1.1) Why Health and Safety in
Construction?

firstly let us look at the definitions of

Project Management and Construction
Management to answer the question
above.
Project Management
Project management is the systematic planning
organizing and
controlling
of allocated resources to accomplish project
cost
time
quality and performance objectives.
Construction Management
This is sub-branch of Project Management.
Construction Management organizing and directing
men
materials
equipment
to accomplish the purpose of the designer.

Construction Management takes Project

Management System as a reference while it is
operating .
Health and Safety for fitting
with the principles of;

quality equipment
1.2) Responsibilities of Construction
Managers
• Project Management (in general)
• Cost Management
• Time Management
• Quality Management
• Contract Administration
to fulfill all given above;
• Safety Management

Because accidents make you lost on cost, time, quality and

other contract requirements.
Safety Management
It is obviously seen that, safety management is
one of the prominent element of project
management process. Therefore, to complete a
project successfully to fulfill the requirements of
the client, you should perform all the processes
safely.
If you would like to be successful to construct your
project safely, you should establish a safety
management system in each phase of the project.
1.3 Why Construction Industry?
• We are Civil Engineering students.
• Construction Industry is one of the biggest sector in
the world.
• Construction industry is project based and non-
iterative industry.
• There are many subcontractors and its difficult to
coordinate them.
• There are different type of jobs .
• Working conditions and hazards are changing
continuously.
1.4) The Main Causes of Fatal
Accidents in the
Construction Industry
• Fall from height (Scaffoulds, edges etc.)
• Contact with electric.
• Being struck by moving objects.
• Being crushed by collapsing structures.
• Traffic Accidents in the construction sides.
1.5) Classification of Construction
Works

1.8) Health and Safety Management
• H&S Management is a part of the overall
management system.
• That facilities the management of the OH&S
risks associated with the business of the
organisation.
• This includes the organisational structure,
planning activities, responsibilities, practices,
procedures, processes and resources for
developing and achieving, reviewing and
maintaining the organisations OH&S policy.
1.9) Construction Safety Management
Construction Safety Management systems is
comprased of 13 main activities.

Safety Literature and practitioners emphasize

these main elements when implementing a
safety system.
