The Famous Borobudur Temple

Who doesn’t know Borobudur? Borobudur is the biggest Buddhist temple in


Indonesia, located in Magelang city, Central Java, Indonesia. This temple is very
beautiful and attractive. People from all over Indonesia and tourists from many countries
are eager to visit Borobudur every year.

Borobudur temple has 1460 relief panels and 504 Buddha effigies in its complex.
It is the place for Buddhists to say their prayers. It was built by King Samaratungga, the
descendants of Syailendra dynasty. Borobudur was completed to be built on May 26th 824
M. It is also said that the name of Borobudur means a mountain having terraces.

Borobudur is constructed as ten-terraces building. The first six terraces are in


square form, two upper terraces are in circular form and on top of them is the terrace
where Buddha statue is located facing west-ward. Each terrace symbolizes the stage of
human life. In line with Buddha Mahayana, anyone who intends to reach the level of
Buddha’s must go through each of those life stages .
Borobudur has been preserved through several restorations. The largest
restoration project was undertaken between 1975 and 1982 by the Indonesian
goverment and UNESCO , which later , the monument was listed as a UNESCO World
Heritage Site. Borobudur is still used for pilgrimage; once a year Buddhists in Indonesia
celebrate Vesak or Waisak at the monument , and Borobudur is Indonesia’s single most
visited tourist attraction.
Since it is one of the many wonders in the world you can see, why don’t you
