Seven years of success!
The Waneta Terrestrial Compensation Program
(WTCP) has selected five projects for funding as part of a
mandate to support habitat restoration and conservation
activities during the construction and Final Acceptance
phases of the Waneta Expansion Project south of Trail.
Since beginning in 2012, Waneta Expansion Project part-
ners Fortis Inc., Columbia Power Corporation and Colum-
bia Basin Trust have distributed a total of $350,000 to 37
research, physical works and applied projects in the Pend
d’Oreille. Butterfly and pollinator inventories, research on
reptile species and rare plant studies are some of the activi-
ties that have taken place. The program is now complete.
“The program has allowed for research and on the
ground projects that have not occurred in the Waneta
area before,” said Mike Hounjet, Waneta Terrestrial Com-
pensation Program Manager. “For example, last year’s
research that led to the discovery of a new family of bees
in BC is an example of work through the WTCP that rein-
forces our appreciation of the Pend d’Oreille and Lower
Columbia as a unique ecosystem in the province.”
Jakob Dulisse, a wildlife biologist whose work through
the compensation program has focused on reptile habitat
conservation, notes that the program has been key in help-
ing to create better awareness of the importance of the area.
“As someone who has led WTCP-funded wildlife proj-
ects since 2013, I can say this program has funded impor-
tant research in a geographic area that has often been
overlooked with regard to stewardship and conservation
efforts. As a result, local land managers, operators and
members of the general public are now more aware of the
habitat needs of local reptiles and other wildlife species
occurring in this unique ecosystem.”
This year’s successful terrestrial compensation projects
include:
• Species at risk inventory for butterflies and bumble
bees
• Biodiversity and floral relationships of spring native
bee fauna
• Douglas Fir beetle trapping
• Bat White Nose Syndrome transmission
• Reptiles at risk program

Navigation Lock Viewing Area—temporary closure

Hugh L. Keenleyside Dam

Due to construction site safety requirements, there will be restrictions to public access of
Hugh L. Keenleyside Dam’s navigational lock viewing area during upgrades to the dam’s security
gates. We anticipate access to the viewing area to be restricted from June 11th until early July.

During the project, there will be no restrictions to boat traffic through the Navigation Lock.

Two alternate viewing areas off Broadwater Road continue to allow observation of boats entering or
exiting the navigation lock on the east and west sides of the dam.

Innovation in forestry typically suggests using new
technologies for forest management or forest products
that enhance economic opportunities. The new BC Com-
munity Forest Association (BCCFA) Resource for Small
Tenure Holders is about innovation in relationships. The
guide offers examples of lessons learned and a framework
for developing relationship-based approaches which go
beyond the legal requirements for small tenures.
The guide was developed for managers of small ten-
ures in BC: community forest agreements, First Nations
woodlands licences and woodlot licences, who are work-
ing closely with local communities, both Indigenous and
non-Indigenous and with provincial, federal and munici-
pal agencies.

activities in your community means investing time,
resources and personal effort. Yet the benefits of durable
and strengthened relationships with local Indigenous and
non-Indigenous people are worth the investment,” con-

A family tradition nearly 20 years old continues to grow as
families increasingly embrace the great outdoors as part of
quality time together. Timed to coincide with Father’s Day,
‘Family Fishing Weekend’ events take place June 15 – 17.
In the Kootenays, participants have a choice of six spe-
cial events combining fishing, learning and socializing.
They will join an estimated 40,000 participants across
the province planning to enjoy Family Fishing Weekend
independently or as part of an organized event.
Family Fishing Weekend began with a dozen events focused in
the Lower Mainland, Vancouver Island and the Okanagan and
has grown to offer events in nearly every corner of the Province.

 Participation in Family Fishing Weekend events is free,
with hands-on tutorials available for beginners or those
looking for a refresher. Loaner rods, reels and tackle are
provided for those who do not have their own gear. The
events also offer opportunities to learn about fishing gear,
share freshwater and saltwater fishing tips, learn about
environmental stewardship and the tradition of recre-
ational fishing. “One round can make a difference”
Fishing licence requirements are waived for the
weekend, meaning Canadian residents can fish licence
free over the three days, although some requirements
remain in effect. Details are posted on the BC Family
Fishing website and the Fisheries and Oceans website.
“Coordinating events over the Father’s Day weekend is
an opportunity to remind people fishing is often a social
activity. It’s not only the solitary angler casting on a lake.
It’s a way to spend quality time with other people in the
outdoors,” says Family Fishing Society of BC President
Wayne Saito. “We see all generations at Family Fishing
Weekend events from the very young who will be hold-
ing a rod for the first time to parents and grandparents
proudly sharing their own fishing tips and techniques
with the next generation.”
Family Fishing Weekend events to be held in the
Kootenays: Nakusp, Arrow Lakes June 16; Nelson, Cot-
tonwood Lake June 16 and June 17; Revelstoke, Wil-
liamson LakeJune 17; Trail, Champion Lakes Provincial
Park June 16; Fort Steele, Kootenay Trout Hatchery
June 16; Cranbrook, Idlewild Lake June 17.
Events are supported by the Family Fishing Society
and organized by Fish and Game clubs, the Conser-
vation Officer Service, municipalities, community
groups and local businesses. A complete list of par-

 Our playground needs your votes!
The Brilliant Cultural Centre has received immense
support in the BCAA Play Here competition with over
10,000 votes since May 28. They are the only Kootenay
finalist in the competition. This competition is a way for
BCAA to help give children in BC better places to play.
At the end of the contest period, the top three voted
play spaces will be awarded up to $100,000 to revitalize
their space.
The Brilliant Cultural Centre is presently in fifth place
in the competition, with voting remaining open until
June 17. “We only need to reach third place to win the
money,” said Jayme Jones, one of the Vote Brilliant Cam-
paign Volunteers. “We can achieve third place if every-
one votes up to four times every day and shares this
campaign with all their friends, family and coworkers. It
is absolutely doable”.
The aging wooden playground at the Brilliant Cultural
Centre will be torn down this summer because it is no
longer safe, despite best efforts to maintain it. The dream
is to build a safe play space for children of all ages that has
accessibility options and nurtures nature play.
As the only Kootenay finalist, they need your contin-
ued votes and support. They need you to vote for them
up to four times every day. You can vote for them using
the platforms: Facebook, Twitter, Google and email. (you
need to confirm your vote through your email address
when email voting) Don’t have Twitter or Google
accounts? Please consider setting one up just for this
competition. It is very easy to do and will make a huge
impact to their campaign.
