Content
Area:
Physical
Science
Grade
Level(s):
2nd
Content
Standard
Addressed:
S2P2.
Obtain,
evaluate,
and
communicate
information
to
explain
the
effect
of
a
force
(a
push
or
a
pull)
in
the
movement
of
an
object
(changes
in
speed
and
direction).
1. Plan
and
carry
out
an
investigation
to
demonstrate
how
pushing
and
pulling
on
an
object
affects
the
motion
of
the
object.
2. Design
a
device
to
change
the
speed
or
direction
of
an
object.
3. Record
and
analyze
data
to
decide
if
a
design
solution
works
as
intended
to
change
the
speed
or
direction
of
an
object
with
a
force
(a
push
or
a
pull).

Instructional
Software
of
different
personal
outlets
such
as
laptops,
tablets,
and
chrome
books.
Students
have
the
ability
to
stop,
rewind,
and
re-‐watch
these
videos
as
many
times
as
they
would
like.
This
allows
a
certain
form
of
differentiation
for
each
student
as
they
are
allowed
to
move
at
the
level
and
pace
of
their
choosing.
Lesson
idea
implementation:
The
BrainPOP
video
will
be
played
to
the
whole
class
to
introduce
the
concept
of
Forces
in
the
world
around
us.
The
teacher
will
lead
a
discussion
in
the
different
types
of
energy
forces
that
play
a
part
in
the
universe-‐
gravity,
magnetism,
push,
pull,
and
friction.
Students
will
work
in
groups
to
design
and
construct
a
way
to
move
objects
a
set
distance.
Groups
will
explain
the
force
they
used
to
move
the
objects
and
what
factors
changed
the
speed
or
direction
of
the
vehicle/object.
Additional
resources
may
be
used
such
as
student-‐
friendly
websites/
videos.
This
assignment
will
be
graded
using
a
rubric.
Groups
will
have
the
opportunity
to
showcase
their
designs
to
the
class
to
see
which
design
appears
to
be
the
most
efficient.
Groups
will
have
the
opportunity
to
justify
their
designs
to
the
class
and
explain
why
they
think
their
design
is
the
most
efficient.
The
group
that
comes
up
with
the
most
efficient
design
will
get
the
opportunity
to
share
it
with
the
school.
Reflective
Practice:
Students
will
have
a
better
understanding
of
how
forces
work
in
the
environment
through
direct
hands-‐on
learning.
To
extend
learning
students
can
write
a
letter
to
construction
worker
via
Microsoft
office
or
another
electronic
platform,
to
explain
to
them
how
they
were
able
to
move
their
objects.
Extending
this
assignment
might
be
using
heavier
items
in
which
an
online
force
simulator
tool
might
be
used.
