Project Management: The Managerial Process

A Project is characterized as an impermanent task attempted to make a remarkable item,

service, or result. Like every organizational effort, the priority of any project is to meet the
needs of the customer.

Project management, on the other hand, is a strategic necessity that aims to provide people
with a powerful set of tools. These tools enhance people’s ability to plan, initiate and manage
activities that are undertaken to accomplish specific organizational objectives. While project
management is often found in the private sector it has also been used to address and solve
vital social issues.

The people who excel in managing successful projects don’t always hold the title of project
managers. Instead, they are accountants, lawyers, administrators, and scientists etc. who are
bound to lead and manage project work as their success relies on being a good project
manager. This signifies that project management is not an isolated field but is well integrated
with many other professions. Simply, it is a crucial job requirement of every career. Every
profession must, therefore, consider this as a necessity than a mere option as it is impossible
to think of a successful profession which is not good at managing projects.

A well-defined project requires having some essential characteristics. They are an established
objective, a properly termed life span, the active involvement of several departments and
professionals and usually an innovative idea. Other requirements include specific time, cost
and performance. A project stands out from regularly performed tasks and therefore is no
ordinary routine task performed by professionals.

A program refers to a group of related projects intended to achieve one common goal over a
period of time. Here, a project manager is assigned for handling each of the projects which
differ in scale and time span. Projects are defined through a life cycle which consists of four
stages namely defining, planning, executing and delivering. In practice, a project life cycle is
used depict the timing of major tasks included in the project.

Project managers perform a very crucial task in any business. They are responsible for
creating a team and an organization that did not exist before. Project managers work with a
diverse team of members to complete the assigned task and are the solely responsible people
for completing the project successfully. This is why every organization looks for efficient
project managers to complete tasks on time.

Project management itself is a challenging and an exciting profession because it deals with
diverse topics. A project manager may never come across similar projects in their career and
they will be constantly learning with every project. The importance of project management is
immense and the most vital reason is to compress the product life cycle. Other reasons are
knowledge explosion, corporate downsizing, increased customer focus and concern on the
triple bottom line (planet, people, profit).

Project management integration is one of the crucial characters of a successful project. This
necessitates the combination of all major dimensions of a project as one. Each aspect is
connected as a single seamless, integrated domain. When it comes to dimensions in the actual
execution of projects there are two main types. They are the technical and socio cultural
dimensions in the process of project management.

When it comes to project management strategy plays a vital role. A skilful strategy is
implemented through projects and therefore every project must possess a clear link to the
organization’s strategy. Organizations use projects as a tool to convert strategy into new
products, services, and processes required for success.

Project managers need to understand their institution’s mission and strategy to make
appropriate decisions and to be effective project advocates. There are four main activities
related to the strategic management process. They are reviewing and redefining the mission
of the organization, set long-term goals and objectives, analysing and formulating strategies
to achieve the objectives and implementation of strategy through projects.

Some organizations are compelled to support strategic planning with the idea of scenario
planning. Scenario planning is defined as the structured process of thinking about potential
future environments that would have high impact to interrupt the way of doing business and
thereby developing strategies to compete in these changing environments.
