No. of Students: 99, Date of Examination: February 24, 2014, AN
Subject No: EE21 002, Name: Electril: Mad1ines
Time: Two hours, Full Marks: 60

Instruction: Answer all questions.

All parts of a question should preferably be responded consecutively at one place. Answer
must be brief and to the point. Make suitable assumptions wherever necessary. Standard
notations are used.

1. (a) Draw the connection diagram of a 3-phase transformer with Vector Group Yzl considering
that in the primary side, terminals Al, Bland Clare connected to make the neutraL 2

(b) For the Yzl transformer with isolated neutral in the primary (assume that the neutral is not
available for external connection in the primary side), is it possible to feed a 1-phase, line-to-
neutral load at the secondary side? Briefly justify your answer. 2

(c) Show how 3-phase to 6-phase conversion may be made by double delta connection. Show
the connection diagram. 3

(d) Show how 3-phase to 12-phase conversion may be made by using transformers. 4

(e) A 1-phase transformer-A of SOOkVA, having O.Olpu resistance and O.OSpu reactance and
another 1-phase transformer-S of 250kVA having O.OlSpu resistance and 0.04pu reactance are
supplying 750kVA loa.d at 400V and at 0.8pf lag. If the no load secondary voltages, EA and E8 are
405V and 415V respectively, find the circulating current at no-load. 4

2. (a) Showing a neat waveform of balanced 3-phase currents those are fed to a 3-phase balanced
winding of a 3-phase induction motor, explain how rotating magnetic field is produced in the air-
gap of the motor. Also derive the speed of the rotating magnetic field in rpm, if the motor is
wound for P poles and fed from a frequency off Hz. 2+2=4

(b) A 8-pole, 3-phase slip-ring induction motor is running with a slip of 0.04. If it is fed from a
50Hz supply, find the speed of rotating magnetic field, speed of the rotor and frequency of the
rotor induced current. 0.5+0.5+1=2

(c) Draw the torque-speed characteristics of a three phase induction motor for (i) different
values of rotor resistance added in the rotor circuit and for (ii) different voltage and frequency
applied to the motor (keeping V/f=constant). Explain briefly the difference noticed. 1+ 1+1=3

(d) Draw the complete torque-speed characteristics (including the braking and generating
regions) of a 3-phase induction motor. 2

(e) The rotor resistance and reactance per phase of a 4-pole, 50Hz, 3-phase induction motor are
0.025 ohm and 0.12 ohm respectively. Find the speedat maximum torque. Also find the value of
additional rotor resistance per phase required to generate 80% of maximum torque at starting.
Neglect stator impedance. 2+2=4

3. (a)Explain the phenomenon of oscillating neutral in a 3-phase transformer. Also explain possible
methods to overcome this. 2+1 =3

(b) Draw the circuit diagram for sumpner's test of a 3-phase transformer. Assume that all the six
terminals are available in primary and secondary sides of the transformer. 2

(c) A 100kVA, 10kV/200V, 50Hz single phase transformer needs 300V on high voltage side to
circulate .full load current with low voltage winding short circuited. The power input is found to
be 1kW for such condition. Find maximum. possible voltage regulation and power factor at which
it occurs for this transformer. 2+2=4

(d) A 3-phase transformer is connected in star-star and the primary fine to neutral voltage is
given by: V=200sinwt + 80sin(3wt+100°)

If the phase turns ratio of primary to secondary is 1/3, then estimate the effective value of (i)
the secondary line-to-line voltage, (ii) the secondary line-to-neutral voltage. 1+1=2

(e) A 3-phase balanced resistive delta-connected load of 3kW is fed using a set of two identical
1-phase transformers of rating 2kVA, llkV/400V, 50Hz from a balanced 3-phase supply. Explain
how the transformers ,will share the load. Neglecting the magnetizing current of the
transformers, draw a neat phasor diagram to show the phase voltage and currents through the
transformers secondary. 2+2=4

4. (a) Explain briefly how the performance of 1-phase induction motor can be explained by double
revolving field theory and hence also develop the equivalent circuit of a 1-phase induction
motor. 2+4=6

(b) A 230V, 50Hz capacitor start 1-phase induction motor had the following test results:

Main winding excited alone: 110V, 2A, 40W, Auxiliary winding excited alone: 80V, 1A, SOW
Find the value of capacitance for obtaining the maximum starting torque. Derive any
equation used. 3+6=9
