‘ABSTRACT
Controlled driling and basting continue tobe an important method of bloc production and for block
spliting, Drill and bas technique has disadvantage that sometimes, it produces cracks in uncontrolled

Dimensional stone such as granites, marbles, sandstone and splitable limestone are used for their
esthetic, elegant, attractive characteristics sucha colour, texture, polish, et. In the world, many
counties are involved in mining of dimensional stones. The world stone production is over 60 iilion
tonnes per year and growing tan annual rate of about 5% India i oe ofthe leading producer, user and
exporter of stones. Italy, China and India together contribute more than half the world's stone
production, Presently Indi ranks tid as stone exporter (Lal, 200),
(Quarrying of dimensional stones involves production of large sized blocks whereas in conventional
quarrying the objective i o break rock in smaller sizes. In India nrmber of quarying techniques have
‘ben developed and are used for extaction of dimensional stones. Feather and wedge method has slow
‘te of production and is costlier. The swelling material, water channelling and flame jet techniques are
also practiced but do not have wide application. In recent years wielchain sawing has become
‘predominant method of marble block separation, Presence of quartz and other hard material iis the
tse of wirefchan ew extaction technique. The use of cooled basing method isthe only option in
sucha situation. Blasting is carried out in quris for removal of overburden and separation a well 5
for spiting of blocks. It continues tobe an important method of block production and spiting in case
of ter stones
Dailing and blasting have advantages of lw cost fst exraction rate and is easy to perform, However,
fasting isnot cari out carefully, this method can result in damage tothe Block and remaining rock>
‘Because advantages are more pronounced than disadvantages, this method is most suitable for low
capital investment mines, deper mines with thn deposits and low-grade deposits.
‘The techniques used in dimensional stone are specialised controlled blasting as itis extremely important
