Lesson Plan
Grade – 3rd
Instruction:
a. Begin by explaining that multiplication is repeated addition.
b. Show students the base 10 blocks. Explaining that the base ten blocks assist
not only with visually creating sets of addition but also to assist with proper
place value. Singles are ones; Rods are tens; Flats are hundreds; and Cubes
are thousands.
c. Have students get into groups of four. Have one student from each groups
come up and get a pack of manipulatives.
d. Start with 1 x 1. Explain that this means one set of one. Have each group
grab a single to represent one. Show them on the overhead projector as
you walk through the steps with them. Tell them to count one set of one.
e. Have the students do a few more multiplication sets of one. So 1x 3; 1 x 5,
up to 10. So start with a single, and count out 3, to get 3 sets of one. Then
ask the groups if they noticed any patterns.
f. Explain that this is called the identity property. Anything multiplied by 1 will
remain the same. In other words that number will keep its original identity.
g. Next do multiplication sets of 2 and 3 repeating steps d and e. Explain and
have the students write down that the answer to a multiplication problem
is called product.
h. Show the students how ten singles = one rod, ten rods= one flat, and ten
flats = one cube.
i. Write a few problems of multiplication and have the groups work together
to get the answers. Walk around and assist when needed.
j. Give each student a blank multiplication table with numbers 1-10 going
down and across. Have them work together to fill in the table, Assisting
them with the first two rows.
Students:
a. Learn vocabulary
b. Get into groups of four
c. Work with base 10 blocks
d. Fill out multiplication table
Evaluate: At the end of the week we will have an assessment to see how well you
guys understood our lesson.
