Question 1 (10 marks)

The table below shows a volume distribution that was derived from a sieve analysis.

(a) Determine the mean and mode of the volume distribution.

(b) Determine the mean and mode of the number distribution.

State all of your assumption(s).

Question 2 (20 marks)

Spherical particles of density 2000 kg·m-3 and size range 20 to 100 µm are fed into a stream
of water (density of 998 kg·m-3 and viscosity of 8.9×10-4 Pa·s) flowing upwards in a 0.1 m
diameter pipe.

(a) Determine the minimum water velocity required to ensure that all the particles are
carried upwards with the water.

(b) Determine whether a cube shaped particle with an equivalent volume diameter of
300 µm and made of the same material as the spherical particles will be carried
upwards too.

(c) If the pipe is packed instead to a depth of 0.5 m with 4 kg of the particle from part
(b), determine the minimum fluidization velocity.

(d) A 2 cm steel ball is placed at the bottom of a can and the can is filled with the
particle from part (b). In 50 words or less, describe and explain what happens
when the contents of the can are agitated (by shaking the can in the up and down
direction).

State and verify all of your assumption(s).

Question 3 (5 marks)
The size distributions shown in the table below were obtained when a gas cyclone was
tested with 200 kg of feed material. The mass of coarse product was 166.5 kg.

27.0-37.0 0.10 0.120
37.0-53.0 0.05 0.060

What is the coarse size distribution if a feed with the following size distribution is
used instead to test the gas cyclone?
