through one of several exit points.
Earlier, the pilgrims had arrived by car, by
bus, and on foot. They had arrived alone or
in groups; carrying banners of their mother
churches, singing, banging pans and pails or
praying quietly.
They all converged at the Namugongo
Uganda Martyrs Shrines, scene of the
martyrdom of 46 young men (22 Catholic
and 24 Anglican) in 1886 during the early
years of Christianity in Uganda.
They were martyred between May and
June 1886 on the orders of Kabaka Mwanga
of Buganda Kingdom. In October 1964, Pope
Paul VI canonised the Uganda Martyrs.
Many pilgrims shouted excitedly and
others wept as the circular steel dome of the
Basilica of the Uganda Martyrs came into
view in Kyaliwajala on the edges of Kampala
city.
An Anglican shrine dedicated to the 23
martyrs of that faith lies about 3kms away
on the same hill and hosts a separate mass,
also attended by millions. A major attraction
is water from the Nakiyanja stream which
pilgrims believe is holy because the blood of
the martyrs flows in it.
The basilica itself is a place of atonement
and celebration combined with sanctity and
the brutality of its birth. Inside it, the effigies
of the bloodied martyrs, wrapped in reeds,
and tied to the logs that burned them draw
many tears. It is at this minor seminary of
the Roman Catholic Church that the pilgrims
climax their journey with a massive mass
attended by millions every June 03.
Many pilgrims had started their pilgrim
in early May, and timed their arrival as
conveniently as possible for the annual
Uganda Martyrs Day celebrations on June
03.They came from East Africa countries
and the wider Great Lakes Region, Nigeria,
Ghana, South Africa, Europe, America, and
more.
Up to 4,000 pilgrims (who came walking)
were recorded and estimates are that four
million people took part in this year’s event.
Last year, officials quoted three million
while a year before it was 2.5 million
people. These numbers are guess as no
scientific count is done.

This year, the Catholic Church celebrated the day under the theme ‘Let us walk in the light of God as a family’ derived from 1
John Chapter 1 Verse 5, while the Anglicans picked a theme ‘Be faithful even to the point of death and I will give you the Crown
of life’ – it was derived from Revelations Chapter 2 Verse 10. The Archdiocese of Tororoorganised the colorful event on the side
of Catholics while at the Anglican shrine (at Nakiyanja-Namugongo) the lead organising diocese was Greater Kigezi Diocese
which comprises of Kigezi, North Kigezi, Muhabura and Kinkiizi. In his message, Rev. Emmanuel Obbo, the archbishop of
Tororo, whose diocese last organised the event in 1998, said the Uganda Martyrs; revered for their faith, courage, and their
countercultural witness to Christ, are “the seed that helped to draw Uganda and all Africa to Christ.” “Let the spirited fight
demonstrated by the martyrs inculcate in us the courage to challenge the bad practices in our families today,” he said.He said
the youth, who are the majority in Uganda, should be supported in their search for a holy life.“We encourage our communities

Martyrs Day T
he Uganda Martyrs Day celebrated
on June 03 every year attracts mil-
lions of pilgrims from all walks of
life.
For Stephen Asiimwe, the chief executive
Great tourism opportunity officer of Uganda Tourism Board(UTB), this
presents a unique opportunity for tourism.
He told The Independent on June 04 that
Martyrs day provides opportunities for
believers to strengthen their faith and spiri-
tual belief but also to Uganda’s economy.
“This is a fantastic opportunity for us to
grow the tourism project,” Asiimwe said,
“We need to rethink the strategy of Namu-
gongo.”
According to him, people in the Namu-
gongo area who are not directly linked to
the Uganda Martyrs Shrine might have to
be relocated.
He said that the pilgrims that go to
Namugongo annually spend on food,
accommodation, transport and other facili-
ties – and are part of tourism value chain.
Already, he said, UTB is working with
churches, Ugandan Embassies abroad,
consumer groups and private companies in
other countries to among other things pro-
mote the Uganda Martyrs Day in Uganda
– which would translate into more pilgrims
coming to Uganda.
“We want the Uganda Martyrs Shrines to
become a must visit for pilgrims across the
world,” he said.
He said private investors could provide
accommodation and related facilities near
Namugongo Shrinesbecause of the antici-
pated increasing numbers.
Already, many small players do brisk
business on Martyrs Day but Asiimwe

Bidco’s expansion to Buvuma

The company to invest US$70million in the

that’s been delayed for almost a decade.
The government in East Africa’s third-

on Lake Victoria’s Buvuma Island in the last
quarter of 2017 to Bidco Uganda Ltd., which
plans a second nucleus palm-oil plantation.
The state is procuring land on behalf of
the company to hasten the process. Pres-
ently the country imports about 200,000
metric tons of palm oil annually, mainly
from Malaysia and Indonesia. Palm oil is
used in a wide range of products including
food, soap, cosmetics and biofuels.
Bidco expects to receive 6,500 hectares
