PORTFOLIO West Jordan Green Infrastructure Plan

West Jordan lies in the heart of the Salt Lake Valley, southwest of Salt Lake City, its
western edge bordered by the Oquirrh Mountain foothills. The city, in the last several
decades, has developed in a manner similar to most suburban areas. Recent years have
brought tremendous growth, but the city has retained its perspective that quality
growth is a must and that natural land is a necessary component.

The Center for Green Infrastructure Design worked with the city’s open space
committee, planning staff and city council representatives to identify and assess the
community’s natural land and green infrastructure assets. The project also included
holding four workshops: one for the city and open space committee, two for the
public and one for landowners. Participants helped locate and identify key areas for
preservation. A green infrastructure design was developed that maximizes the
potential of remaining open lands, especially those along the western edge of the
city, where most open land exists. The city is currently working on the
implementation of the design. Since the landowners were brought into the process
at the beginning, the way has been set to implement the design with minimal conflict.
