Britney Marin 12/19/17 Should Gay Marriage Be Legal?

Gay Marriage is a new feature of society we live in, one that before had no such thing

as a LGBT community. Some people the option to marry is discriminatory and creates

a second class of citizens. A compelling reason why gay marriage should be legal is

because the concept of traditional marriage has changed over time, and the definition of

marriage being between one man and one woman is historically inaccurate. In addition,

gay marriage is protected by the US Constitution's commitments to liberty and equality.

It could leave one to wonder why politics has such a role in holding human beings back

from personal happiness? As for the last reason why gay marriage should be legal is

because many religious leaders and churches support gay marriage and say it is

consistent with scripture.

Gay marriage is gaining traction and exposing society to people with previously

untraditional relationships. On june 26,2015 , the US Supreme court ruled that gay

marriage is a right protected by the US constitution in all 50 states. Anyone should love

anyone as long as it’s real love. Regardless if we are able to love each other by law or

not , mankind should be able to be with anyone they want.

Gay marriage is between partners of the same sex. Nancy F.Cott, a historian from

Harvard University said “​ Official unions between same-sex couples, indistinguishable

from marriages except for gender, are believed by some scholars to have been

common until the 13th Century in many countries, with the ceremonies performed in
churches and the union sealed with a kiss between the two parties. “ ​even if gay

marriage is not completely legal yet in all states , the majority of us show that 80% of

the same sex partners support the right to marry and 55% would marry if they could.

As another pro of gay marriage should be legal is because many religious leaders and

churches support gay marriage and say it is consistent with scripture. One of the

reasons why gay marriage isn’t well supported is because of cultural backgrounds and

religion because it goes against their believes...etc. Gene Robinson ,openly gay former

bishop of the episcopal diocese of new hampshire stated in september 2012 ,”​Scripture 

says where love is, there is God also. And they [religious people] see that love in our 

families, and I think people can't help but be supportive." ​ ​ If these people are accepted

by god then why not let it be legal?

Everywhere you go,There’s always two perspectives into what you’re dealing with. In

this case the question is why should gay marriage be illegal? Gay marriage should be

illegal because people should not have their tax dollars used to support something they

believe is wrong. This leads to inequality because they don’t have the right to say

whether they support this gay marriage or if they are against it. Whatever the case is

they’d still have their tax dollars used to support this problem. Peter S. Sprigg, MDiv,

Senior Fellow for Policy Studies at the Family Research Council, said that if gay

marriage were legalized, "[t]axpayers, consumers, and businesses would be forced to

subsidize homosexual relationships... One of the key arguments often heard in support
of homosexual civil marriage revolves around all the government 'benefits' that

homosexuals claim they are denied. Many of these 'benefits' involve one thing–taxpayer

money that homosexuals are eager to get their hands on."
