One school might focus on exercises called
poses or asanas. Another might teach special
breathing exercises. Yet another might teach
meditation, a practice of reflection that helps
people concentrate deeply. All yoga schools
believe that practising yoga makes you calmer,
stronger and more flexible
Yoga helps some people manage their
medical conditions. For example, practising
yoga can reduce the occurrence of asthma
attacks. Certain breathing and stretching
exercises can improve lung function. Some
schools have introduced yoga into their physical
education programs. It helps students
concentrate, relax and control stress.
Three different poses are pictured. Figure 1
shows the cat pose, which helps stretch and
strengthen the spine. Figure 2 shows the tree
pose. This pose helps develop good balance and
concentration. Figure 3 shows the child's pose.
It releases tension in the shoulders and helps
relieve mental fatigue.
Yoga classes are available in most cities and
towns, and cater for people of all ages. Anyone
