A Light towards the Future

Thomas Alva Edison, an inventor, is considered an important part of the creation of the modern
world. He was born in Milan, Ohio in 1847 to a middle class family. He was the last of seven
children, and did not talk until he was almost four. He also had trouble hearing, which became
worse as he got older.
Thomas was a very curious child, and was always asking questions. Most adults, including his
teachers, did not have much patience with him. His mother, who thought he was very intelligent,
decided to school him at home. Thomas began reading in the town library at the age of 11. He
began with the bottom shelf, and did not stop until he had read every single book in the library.
This began a pattern, and throughout his life, he was mostly self-taught.
Thomas got a job as a telegraph operator, and began inventing things in his free time. He
was interested in electronics and helped improve and develop many devices, such as one that
improved the telegraph, the phonograph, as well as the telephone (though he didn’t invent it),
among many others. (By the age of 83 he had 1,093 patents.) He is mostly known for his work on
improving the incandescent light bulb and using it as an alternative to the gas lights used at that
time. His curiosity and creativity began the change that led to the modern world.
Remember that Thomas read all the books in the town library. Among the books that he read,
were the works of Shakespeare, which he loved. After reading them, he decided he wanted to be
an actor. Imagine what our world would be like if he had not changed his mind.

2. The electric light bulb...

a) was less practical b) was more efficient c) emitted more light.
