Fall 2010 The Fundamentals of Engineering exam (FE or EIT) is the first of two exams
required for professional licensure. The FE/EIT exam includes topics covered in

FE/EIT undergraduate engineering courses; therefore, taking the exam during your junior
or senior year of college may make the exam easier to pass.
Exam Date: The National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES) writes
the exam, and it is administered at the state-level twice a year.

• All questions are multiple-choice
• Eight hours in length
• Contains 120 general engineering questions in the morning
• Contains 60 questions in the afternoon
• F or afternoon portion, examinees opt to take a general exam or one of six
discipline-specific exams: chemical, civil, electrical, environmental, industrial,
or mechanical engineering

Principles and Practice of Engineering

Fall 2010 The Principles and Practice of Engineering exam (PE) is the second of two exams
required for professional licensure. Applicants for the PE have already passed the

PE FE/EIT and earned the required amount of professional engineering experience.
