ABC SEAL

Major devices fitted with ABC (Air Blow Cut) seals /

The ABC seal is a dry seal configured


of split rings. It is used in many
devices_such as air blowers, centri-
fuges, mixers and instruments han-
dling powders - as a shaft seal unit.

Configuration and seal principle /
The ABC seal is a floating type seal
configured of split rings, fitted to the
shaft using garter springs. The ABC
seal follows the runout of the shaft.
The typical configuration of an ABC
seal is one that combines two sets of
ABC rings to make a double seal. The
barrier box between the ABC rings is
pressurized to a pressure approxi-
mately 0.02MpaG higher than the
purge gas induced pressure inside
the device.
This pressure difference prevents
flow material (fluid) leaking out of the
vessel into the atmosphere.

Features /
1. Accommodates axial runout
The ABC seal accommodates vessels
with rough accuracy in areas such as
axial runout and locomotion.
2. Maintenance free
The ABC seal is maintenance free be-
cause it has an automatic follow con-
figuration that works even if it becomes
worn.
3. Long lifespan
The ABC seal has an average lifespan
of approximately five years, which
means that it is effective in keeping run-
ning costs low.
4. Replacement possible without
dismantling device
The ABC seal is a split-ring type that
can be replaced without dismantling the
vessel.

hard coating is required, in order to
reduce the wear of that surface.

The above device is a screw extruder.


The photo of the vessel using gland
packing reveals white powder scat-
tered about the exterior of the
device. However, the photo after the
conversion to ABC seal shows no
white powder, which is an improve-
ment to the work environment.

Purge gas control /
Purge gas pressure must be con -
trolled properly to ensure correct op-
eration of the ABC seal. The purge
gas must be maintained at a pressure
of 0.02MpaG greater than the pres-
sure inside the vessel. If purge gas
pressure drops below that of the pres-
sure inside the vessel, the powder and
gas in the vessel will leak out.

【Option】Blow system for molten fluid /


When the vessel in question is han-
dling a molten fluid, there are times
when blowing off is not possible with
the ABC ring's purge gas. In such
cases, install divided bushing, as
shown below, to close off the contents
inside the device, and increase purge
gas flow speed, to enable a forceful
blow.
