Project Proposal

Over the course of this year, I have improved my independent working practice and my
reliability within company working most. Over the topics that we have explored, I have
been pushed out of my comfort zone, to perform both on my own and in an ensemble
after weeks of arranged rehearsal. This helped me to decide on Dance for my final
pathway choice because although, I overcame my fears of singing solo in front of my
peers, I have discovered that I am most confident when dancing with a group due to the
rehearsal within college time and rehearsal along to videos taken in my own time. Now
that I look back on my times in shows before college, I have always felt more confident
when being in a dance troop/being a dancer than when playing a main part in a play, such
as when I was in amateur productions of 42nd street, White Christmas and Sweeney Todd
to name a few. It just took me the closed rehearsals to see this for myself and to have the
confidence in myself for this.
My aim for this showcase is to present an accurate and moving interpretation of events
that occurred during the Suffragette movement, which at the time were devastating,
brutal, desperate and revolutionary. I will research in to the White Feather movement,
Black Friday, Deeds not Words and other Suffragette Speeches and Force Feeding to
create raw and emotional responses to our subject material. These four mentioned areas
will be the focus points of our dances for our Final Major Performance. I will make sure
not to censor my research when it comes to disturbing topics, as although it may not be
pleasant to learn or read about, it did happen and it's the truth of what we are
performing. I believe that with a topic that affects as many people as equality and how
hard people fought for it, it would be wrong to dial down what they went through. To
research in to this accurately, I will use different forms of media to inform my practice
such as listening to songs inspired from the movement, watching documentaries that tell
the story in detailed quotes from survivors of force feeding and prison sentences, this will
give me wider understanding that will show through my work.
After each rehearsal or performance, I will evaluate by writing down what we did, what I
found hard before, if I overcame it or not and what I will need to work on for the next
session. As this will be in note form, at the end of the performances, I will use the last
days before our deadline to rewrite this in a way that can be understood. I struggle with
staying in role, when acting directly towards and interacting, so this is something that I
will focus on, when I assess myself.
My research will consist of 1 and a half hours each week and could be made up of
watching documentaries, finding work for a class and a certain study or could be finding
quotes to base parts of my work on.
