Bolted Joints FE Modeling
Global level models whose focus is only loads evaluation takes a different
modeling approach than detailed level 3D stress analysis.
— Models are primarily shell and beam construction
— Holes may or may not be modeled discretely
— Connections may be made with beams, constraint equations, etc…
These joints are a simplification of actual geometries.

Bolted Joints FE Modeling
Refined mesh 3D solid FE models can provide detailed part stresses and
represent local part to part interaction.
— Local submodel or full detailed solid FE model.
— Full 3D solid bolt
bolt, contact defined between bolt and adjoining surfaces
— Mating part surfaces defined with contact, perhaps friction.
— Full 3D solid bolt model with threads in shank and nut - not discussed here

Contact Offset
The user can add or subtract from any geometrically modeled penetration
or gap by specifying an “Offset” value:
— A positive Offset increases interference.
— A negative Offset decreases interference or results in a gap
gap.
— Offset is combined with a geometric penetration.
